Need Help

I just got ride of a 1991 dodge shadow and got me a i think its a 1983 Subaru GL. the problem is it wont shift into Drive, you have to manually shift it into 1st and 2nd then when you shift it into drive it goes right back into 1st. whats wrong?? can anyone help me??

Ok i found out that it is a 1983 subaru GL. Its a automatice and it wont shift into drive. I can manually shift it into first and second but then you go into drive and it just down shifts to first. can anyone help me out i have no clue how to fix it. this is my first subaru.

Is the automatic shift controlled by the old cable system or is it a hydraulic system.

The cables on the old system could rot over time and cause this kind of problem.

Chilton makes a repair manual for all car models, you can also get a CD version. Search with google or get a used manual on E-bay.I recommend this if you are thinking of tackling any work on your own, there are pictures, instructions, do’s and don’ts it will make it easier to figure out if you are able to do the work or if you need to have it done by a garage.Cheers and good luck

try checking the vacuum hose that goes to the transmission modulator, probably broken or rotted, had this same problem with a 69 firebird, hose came unplugged.
