Starter Removal 1995 S10 Pickup

Ok... I got a 1995 S10 pickup 4.3 V6 TBI 4X2 Automatic. I needed to replace the starter. Got the 2 bolts out holding the starter but it seems like there is no room to move the starter so I could drop it. I already got the starter disconnected, took the passenger side exhaust manifold out and the Y Pipe (which was an adventure by itself), still can't maneuver the damn thing out. Is there anything I still need to remove? HELP !!

You may not want to hear this one...but according to the book..remove the engine mounts and raise the engine slightly...remove the tranny mount and support it with a jack stand...this should give you enough clearance to get it out...make sure you take note of any shims and installation is in reverse....

WHAAAAAT !!!! Man that SUCKS!!! Looks like I bit more than I could chew with this project. All I need is 2 inches of clearance. The shield that covers the starter gear (looks like a little tit) gets in the way.... Man this is bad news......

I just removed the starter in my son's 95 4.3 yesterday to replace motormounts. Yep I cussed too, but didin't need to removed the "Y" pipe or lift the motor or tranny. I did have to remove the flywheel cover & the brace on each side from the motor to the bell housing. The toughest part was getting to the starter wires to get it to come all the way out.

I did run across one questionable detail. The starter had a piece of thick gasket or foam between the starter nose cone & the bell housing. Is that right?

What happens if that gasket is not replaced? Changed the starter on mine a few weeks ago but after getting all finished, found the gasket laying on the floor under some tools. Is this a major issue or not?

I got a '95 4.3 and have replaced my starter without touching anything else. It takes a bit of time to get the starter in the right position, you have to change positions a couple of times, but it should come out. There is no reason to disconnect things like motor mounts and bell housings.

Easiest way... (I've doen tons of these) Drop the flywheel cover, remove the passenger side motor mount cross bolt, jack up the engine about an inch, remove starter.... Total time, 20 minutes.

Thanks all for the GREAT tips... One question. How do I remove the fly wheel cover? How many bolts do I need to remove?

4 bolts (15mm) 2 bottom, 2 top, and swing the support arms out of the way

Lightbulb Re: Re: Starter Removal 1995 S10 Pickup

One Update....... Starter worked fine for a couple of weeks then all of a sudden the truck won't start. You hear a click when turning the key. Battery is okay (tested). Turned out that the Positive cable was corroded and needed replacing. Moral of the story, if you are replacing the starter inspect the cable and replace if necessary. I had to drop the starter again to bolt the battery cable to the solenoid. Live and learn I guess.
