99 gst wouldnt start

This is my first time in a long time back here...

This morning my 99 gst wasnt starting and when it did it was sounding a little weird. This could be becuase it was cold, but im thinking this may be leading to crankwalk or something.

Kevin, if your still here can you give me some advice as what to check in order to prevent this or anything else that may become a problem?

Anyone else's advice would be great. thank you

Re: 99 gst wouldnt start

If you are concerned that it is crankwalk then you need to remove the lower timing belt cover and check the play in the crank (I don't remember what the specs are). Also, check to make sure the CAS is not destroyed.

Re: 99 gst wouldnt start

CW is a big step. i would guess it is a cold start. if it persists then you will have a problem. if the clutch sticks to the floor making lefts, that ain't good. but jumping right to CW is kindof a long shot.

check www.racingknowledge.com in the DSM/CW section...

Re: 99 gst wouldnt start

car starting in the cold? i had this problem. try giving it gas when starting. my problem was my stock BOV hose return thinging was unclamped creating boost leak. also 1 of my spark plugs was out so i was running on 3 cylinders.

check air filter, boost leaks around the BOV, battery, and spark plugs. also try putting some fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank. solved my problems.

Re: 99 gst wouldnt start

ya also if you go to Jiffy Lube [or the likes] you can get a fuel injector cleaner service where they put this stuff directly into the intake mani. did wonders for me...

plugs and wires may be another issue. get NGK BPR7ES plugs and gap them to ~.028. stock wires are also a great buy. the website that just got posted in another thread might be a great place to get cheap mitsu parts too...

Re: 99 gst wouldnt start

Well i have come to a conclusion that i think that there is flat spot on my starter b/c i hear the starter solenoid click but the engine doesnt turn over, so the brushes must be in the "flat spot" at that time b/c after i keep clicking and moving the starter a little bit it then the car turns over so im gonna get a new starter. Does anyone know about how much a starter is for a 1997 GST??

Re: 99 gst wouldnt start

2g tranny starter will run you for about 160 or so from the dealership, but it is gauranteed to work. Remanufactured from pepboys or autozone will be around $90 or so. But mind you, it is a BITCH to install yourself, so make sure that you raise your car a bit, have a friend there to help, and have some bright lights to reach in there. Other than that, its pretty simple to install except the accessibility issue and a few hard to reach bolts. Was a pain in the arse to install on friends tranny. Any questions about it just shoot em my way...unless you are like a pro and I am just making an idiot out of myself...-_-

To answer your question...

The CAS is the Crank Angle Sensor

If I remember correctly it is a white optical sensor that determines the angle of the crank. When the crank begins to walk it begins hitting, and eventually destroying, the CAS. No CAS = No Start!!

Glad to hear it's not CW

Re: 99 gst wouldnt start

Ok first thing to know is the motor turning over? Or are you talking about the starter not even turning the motor over. When you turn the key on does the car try to start but just keeps turning over? If so you need to check if you have Spark and Fuel. If you have those then you need to check compression. If everything is fine and you still cant get it started your timing is off.

Now if it just doesnt turn over, check the batter connection and check the connection of the wires that run to the starter. Make sure everything is grounded good and the power wire to the starter is good and has a good tight connection. Maybe even take some jumper cables and run the black wire to one of the starter bolts and then to the negative battery cable. If that works then you need a better ground to the starter. If not it seems as if your starter could be bad! Good luck.

Re: 99 gst wouldnt start

Left side of the motor, in the rear, right under the intake manifold. The starter sits agains the block and sticks into the bell housing on the tranny. You might need to take the battery and UICP out to get at it.
