Brake Problem

I have a 2000 galant GTZ with about 47K miles on it. I started to feel a shaking in the steering wheel while I brake. I assumed that something was wrong with the brakes so i took it in to get checked and they said that the rotors were warped and it was a design flaw in the car and that the air isnt ventalated well enough and the rotors warp easily. I find it hard to believe that that is true. I just figure that with almost 59k miles the breaks need to be changed any way. I am 17 and can admit that I break to hard sometimes. I want to buy new rotors but am worried that it will just go back to the same thing. Does any one know what i should do or if there are some rotors that wont warp? am i screwd what ever i do? or is my mechanic just wrong? Please help me out.

The best thing to do for this problem is get slotted rotors. It helps dicipate the heat faster. another thing you can do is get creative. You can cut slits into wheel well plastic to allow airflow from the front of your car. They do sell a louver plastic peice fir this application.
You can find the rotors on ebay. I have seen the complete set for around $240. I have only seen the louvered well part once and i cant remember where that was. I will be doing the louvers on my 2001 myself.

Your mechanic is absolutely right. My '99 Galant was shaking whenever I braked. I first noticed this problem when my car was at about 47k miles, same as yours. I ignored the problem for a couple thousand miles, but then when the shaking got worse, I took the car in to my mechanic. The rotors had warped, and needed to be replaced. It shouldn't cost you more than $400 to fix.

Best case scenario is it won't happen again. Worst case scenario is that you'll need the rotors replaced every 50k miles or so, so I wouldn't worry about it.

It's pretty much the only issue my car has ever had.
