In the front corner of the engine compartment on the drivers side there is a black cannister which is the charcoal cannister.I dont know if your 86 has it but my 82 has it.If you have it check all the lines for leaks.

Fuel leakage and/or fuel odor:

1leak in fuel feed or vent line
2 tank overfilled.fill only to auto-shut off
3 emissions system filter clogged
4 vapor leaks from system lines
5 carb/fuel injection internal parts excessively worn or out of adjustment.

Re: I'm huffing gas

I have the charcole canester removed I was told my carb dose not tie back into it (I hope thats true its a 600 edelbrock preformer).I put it on because the Qjet on it was toast, and the car smelled like gas back then too. I have no egr valve and I think that should keep the smog pump from working.any ideas on detecting a vapor leak.

Re: I'm huffing gas

mismatched parts.a 305 isnt really made for all that carb and intake.you need bigger valves in the heads, and a higher duration cam.but if your just worried about the smell, find your exhaust leak.If you can smell it in your car as your driving down the street, then imagine how people feel who get stuck behind you.A stock aluminum intake and a quadrajet carb would fix your stink-out problems, and make the engine last longer.Does it have a vaccume hose going to the distributor?or a bunch of wires?

Re: I'm huffing gas

you could have exhaust flow coming out of the fresh air tubes, located on the exhaust manifold. It is also possible you need to get a jet kit for the carb, wich would be a 60 dollar remedy for the unburned fuel.Ive had a lot of customers with the same problem you have ,and it is always related to a fuel leak,or over-sized carb,or exhaust leak.

Re: I'm huffing gas

crap!!!! when I bought it I was told it had a 350 so the parts were to go on a 350. then I was told they will bolt up and that it would not mater. it had a Qjet and stock intake and still it smelled like gas then too. so must be exhaust well its coming of the road when the sticker is out and Im going to do a total resto. oh and there is no hose going to the destributer. the smog pump is still on the car and conected to the cat could that be it.
