Fuel System Problem?
Have a 97 Grnd Prix GTP new since 97. Had a lot of stuff changed out since then. CURRENTLY, I have a NO START situation. Doesn't seem to be getting gas to plugs.
I changed the Fuel Pump related RELAYS and checked the FP related fuse. Car worked for a day after relays were changed, BUT NOW IS NO START. I checked the fuel pressure and there is NONE. Does this should like fuel pump problem. IF SO, is it in the gas tank and is the change out job a tough one? I looked up the price of fuel pump and got quite a shock at approx $300! WOW! Id like to try to do job myself if not to difficult. Thanks for the help. GPme |

This should help with the removal of the fuel pump. Disconnect the vehicle’s battery. Remove your spare tire, jack, and pull back or remove the carpeting in your trunk. You will see a plate at the front of the trunk right behind the rear seat. Remove the seven 10mm nuts on the plate and gently use a flat-blade screwdriver to pry the plate up. Remove the two electrical weatherpack connectors and the three fuel line connections. Remove the two outside fuel lines by squeezing the clear plastic retaining clips together and pulling outward. The middle fuel line is removed by applying a gentile squeeze to the black ring and pulling outward. Remove the retaining c-clip around the pump assembly. Remove the in-tank assembly by pulling up and sliding the whole assembly up and out of the tank. Be careful as you remove the assembly because you will have to maneuver the end of the assembly to the side to remove it due to the tank level sender and fuel sock. DO NOT FORCE THE ASSEMBLY OUT. Rotate it and tilt it to the side until the assembly slides out. Hope that helps ~Larry~

Re: Fuel System Problem?
Dear BIG L,
Thanks for the GREAT info on replacement of the fuel pump. I'm sure I can pull it now, if necessary, HOWEVER, you mentioned the "fuel pump resistor". I don't beleive a replaced this. I replaced the RELAYS within the fuse box under the hood on the passangers side. Do you know where the FP RESISTOR is located. Is it on the pass side fire wall? Pass side FENDER inside the engine compartment. Or is in actually UNDER THE FENDER and accessable by taking the passanger wheel and wheel shroud off? You have been very helpfull. Appreciate your insite and assistance. GPme Quote:

Here are some instructions for replacing the fuel pump resistor Click Here and you can either get the kit from your local dealer GM PART # 88951182 which lists for 44 bucks or you can get it from www.gmpartsdirect.com for 32 bucks to your door.
Id try the resistor first. ~Larry~

IT'S FIXED AND RUNNIN, for now...
My thanks to BIG L and all who responded to my thread. The info I was given from you all helped to correctly diagnos my problem so that I was not ripped off.
My fuel pump and filter were replaced. Didn't need to do the fuel resistor thing, so I'm taking that part back to the GM dealer where it was purchased, they had it in stock. Fuel pump was $300 for part with $75.00 to install. Fuel filter was $10.00 part and was included with fuel pump install. I have $180,000 miles on my 97 GTP and need to get as many more as I can. I am saving up to replace the super charger, of which I know will need to be replaced soon. Thanks again, I'm sure I will be "threading" you all again. GPme |
