P0442 - Evap

I took my sister's '97 Eclipse GS to AutoZone today and pulled the code with the OBD II scanner thing since the Check Engine light has been on for quite some time now. The scanner gave me the number P0442 and said "EVAP - Emissions Control System Leak (small)." Does anyone know that means? I asked the guy behind the counter and he said that I have a vacuum hole somewhere in one of my tubes and just had to replace it. Is that right? If so, how do I locate the hole?

check for a vacuum leak on all your vacuum hoses. if you find a hose disconnected, find where it goes and put it back on and if you find a hose w/a hole in it or cracked or something, replace it.

I did do the search but have already looked through the ones that matched. I'm still stuck....

Check the hose on top of the tb (the plastic one). Better yet just replace it with new a hose, shouldn't cost you more than $1

I'm not too sure which hose you're talking about. Do you have a picture?

You can't miss it. Look on the top of the throttle body. There is a hose there that runs from the TB the the back of the firewall somewhere (I think it runs to the firewall).

Looking from the top it looks like this:

make sure your gas cap is on tight. see if autozone has a gas cap tester or try just replacing your gas cap.

Hey! Do you think your sister would go out with me someday if I fixed her car since my current girlfriend won't see me since I changed her oil without asking permission? Oh well. That's another story.
AS far as which hose to check, there should be NO hoses disconnected,split,or hissing under the hood, behind the right front fender panel, or back at the gas tank. There's a good manual at lindertech.com call "Getting to know OBDII" that should help.

cbell77, if you read this, I hope you don't mind but I pulled the picture off the pictures you posted and circled that one thing since I don't have a picture of my sister's engine. Thanks for the help guys.

I just spent another day trying to figure out what's wrong with her car and still no luck. I'm about to throw in the towel and take it to a shop....how does mechanics know where to look?

And ashah000, I know what you were talking about now. I didn't replace the plastic part you were talking about but replaced the rubber thing that connected the plastic and throttle body because it was cracking...still no luck though.....UGH!!!!

The good mechanics read manuals to understand where to look. The poor ones replace parts at your expense. I've had to read about ten books to understand this complex problem your working on. So don't feel bad.
The part you circled is a PCV valve which is not a part of the problem. So that leaves you with looking in the three areas I mentioned in my previous post or taking it to a mechanic. LOL
