Re: what is a good mod for my cavi
Well, he's got a stronger sense of humor than "cavalierguy2000"
Yeah, headwork (port and polish), if you can afford it, will make a noticable difference. Bolt ons will make more of a difference after the P&P. A header and/or larger throtle body for example. On the cheap side, get some better plugs/wires, cold air intake, and exhaust, which I'd do first. |

Re: what is a good mod for my cavi
ok well for 1 in depends on what cavalier u have what year is it what size engine currently is in it. i have a 2004 cavalier with a 2.2 ecotech engine, i am planing on getting the 2.6 liter eclipse engine shipped over from japan and swapping out the engines after i place a turbo on it. or i might just stick with the 2.2 eco and put a turbo on that. whatever u do stay away from nitrous. but one of ur best bets to make it quicker is put a turbo on it

Re: Re: what is a good mod for my cavi
Very interesting idea. What do you think it would cost to get a turbo put on a 3.1 V6, and what kind of power could I expect?

Re: what is a good mod for my cavi
(Not sure how to turbo a V6. Having two manifolds would it require two turbos?)
The cost will depend on how much boost you are looking for. If I could turbo my car, I would start with a bigger turbo, then use an electronic boost controller to set it down to a lower PSI to run on stock internals, that way you can build-up the motor and increase the boost as you can afford without having to buy a bigger turbo later. Generally 5-7 PSI is safe on a stock motor, any higher than that and you will have to upgrade your rods, pistons, crankshaft, fuel system, etc. You'll just have to call around at junkyards and ask how much, if they have one. See the thread under performance, "Boost Your Car", it has more info and links to website that sell turbos. "...Port and polish, Bolt ons, headers, larger throtle body, high perfomance plugs/wires, cold air intake, and exhaust..." I believe adding a turbo on top of all these other mods will make it burn the tires in 3rd gear at 50mph! |

Re: what is a good mod for my cavi
What is up with people. You people do not have any Idea what you are talking about. You can put a turbo on a v6 with a pair of manifold that join before the turbo. And fitting a larger turbo and then turning the boost down is stupid. Have you ever heard of turbo lag? this is where when building revs the there is a delay while the exhaust spools up and then compresses the air the bigger the turbo the more lag you will experience. SO if you only want to run a low pressure set-up then you will want a smaller turbo as lage turbo's such as a garret t4 would be great for drag racing as you always keep the revs up but it would suck d*ck on the street!! also on the track. Also the Cavalier has a big problem when it comes to putting the power down, it's front wheel drive, so if you power on too soon out of a corner understeer galore and wheelspin galore when trying to show that civic how it's done at the lights. So you will need an LSD or at least a phantom grip for about $350. Not easy to do yourself if your not at least competent with mechanics! Turbocharging any car will cost big and if you have over say 60-70k miles you might want to consider internal work first. To be honest putting a turbo on a 94 3.1 cavalier will cost about 4 times what your car is worth! Also on a turbo you have to watch the oil feed and change you oil even more regularly. To be honest if you really want boost you car go for a Supercharger. they will cost the same at first but less over time. If you do want a vortech centrifugal supercharger then try someone like RSMRacing.com or just browse throught results on a search engine.

Re: what is a good mod for my cavi
I'm sure I do have an Idea of what I'm talking about. I may not have much experience with turbos, I'm just answering a question that no one else would answer. I understand what you are saying, a bigger turbo has more lag, a smaller one would spool much faster. My idea was more about cost, if you couldn't build-up the motor for awhile but was planning on it, you could tune the boost down on a bigger turbo to save cost later. But who could afford a turbo but not internals. Here's my sign. Great info man, you should post more often.
