ITs a 4 speed (i think) auto right now, and i really miss the manual days of my old car. how much estimated do you all think its gonna cost to put a manual into my 1997 sw1

for low cost, i would try to find a cheap parts car, or maybe a good junkyard.

is that going to work with a 97?

with the exception of a few part numbers, that should work for all years, no major changes and only a few minor changes were made to the manual transmission between 91-02
