'99 Tahoe woes

I am the original owner of a 99 Tahoe w/ under 45K miles. I tend to really like my Tahoe except for the following:

1) rattling at idle. It seems some kind of thin metal sound (maybe a heat shield/shroud) is rattling only at idle from either the engine compartment/under the front driver/passengers. It has ALWAYS done this, and it's annoying as heck

2) the occasional rough shifting of the AT, especially from dead stop. As soon as I let go of the brakes and it moves forward (but before I hit the accel.) it sometimes gives a "bump" forward, and also at what's supposed to be 2nd gear shift, too.

3) very squeaky door jambs in the rear. lubrication must be done almost monthly.

4) no real power from a stop. We also have a 2WD 2002 Suburban (1500) and that baby rocks from a dead stop.


If you have any suggestions for the above, I'd appreciate a response.

** I own a 95 and had the same problem when I bought mine. There was some type of shield/cover that was below the catalytic converter that had come lose due to age/rust, and it made an annoying "tinkling" sound at idle and stops. Brought it up on a lift and the thing came off with a long screwdriver helping it. I imagine it was some kind of heat shield so you would not start a brush fire when off road, but the truck seems to be running fine without it.



2) the occasional rough shifting of the AT, especially from dead stop. As soon as I let go of the brakes and it moves forward (but before I hit the accel.) it sometimes gives a "bump" forward, and also at what's supposed to be 2nd gear shift, too.

** Never had that problem, but I am sure somehere can help out.. I also have an 85 Chevy Blazer Millitary Diesel, and it did that and it turned out to be a cracked vaccum line from a regulator on the tranny. Maybe that would be something to have checked???

** I am assuming that you mean the far back doors. The rear tires kick up alot of dust and water and I seem to find they need attention often too. I added small mudflaps on my truck, and it seemed to cut back a bit, but still I make it a point to lubricate all the doors when I do the oil change.

Possibly a tune up? Maybe something dumb like a clogged air or fuel filter? Start with the small stuff and work up, fuel filter will cause a headache, and yucked up spark plugs will too. Check over your plug wires as well to see if there is any chafing/rubbing as well.

dude, your number 2 is exactly what Im going thru. After your local dealer about the slip yoke and see what he says.

I have a 99 tahoe- 4 door 4x4 LT

When I stoped & took off it made a clunk noise. I change the tranfer case oil to the new updated oil, ask the dealer. I think it was called autotrak II blue in color. Fixed my problem.
