96 Ram Automatic Delayed Upshift

My 96 automatic V10 has a delayed upshift from 2nd to 3rd. It will only upshift if all pedal pressure is removed from the gas pedal. Once pedal pressure is removed, it upshifts fine. If still in 3rd, prior to OD and converter lock, any gas pedal pressure more than just to maintain current vehicle speed results in immediate downshift back to 2nd. Irritating when trying to merge onto the interstate. Once in OD and converter lock, it drives fine. The transmission also kicks in and out of gear when coming to a stop, such as a stop sign. It is more pronounced cold than warm, feels just like moving the shift lever from D to N and back. A slight amount of increased RPM seems to prompt it to go back into gear. If done while in D, it slams into gear hard as if the shift lever was moved to D with the RPMs too high. Shifting the lever to N, revving it once and letting it idle back down and then moving the lever back to D works as well. There is no slippage in any gear, so long as it stays in gear. I changed the filter and fluid after this started happening, and there was very little material in the pan and the fluid was not burned - red and smelled fine.

Hope someone has a thought on this problem.

No check engine light, no other symptoms at all.

Re: 96 Ram Automatic Delayed Upshift

I'm having a similar problem with my trany, it just dosn't want to shift out of second untill I let off the gass. I haven't found out exactly what the problem is yet, but I'm hoping its somethng simple like a TV cable adjustment or a new TPS. if you figure out what is causing it, please post it here, I'll do the same if I find anything out.
good luck,
Keith
