1979 280 Zx

Thinking about buying a 79 280zx. Looking around tonight I'm finding out how much I don't know. For under a thousand bucks, a running, 140,000 mile, broken a/c, slightly rusted decent shape Z. I have 1000 SF air conditioned garage and some tools (willing to make the investment). I have changed the occassional water pump, alternator, ps pump in the past on other cars, but I would not say I am a mechanic. I have the desire and the money to restore this car, but I don't want to start with a bad car. I'm reaching out to the community hoping someone will give advice on where to start.

  1. Check body & chassis (including underside) for any rust and/or damage.
  2. Check engine, engine bay area, & underside for any leaks.
  3. Make sure the car starts and runs.
  4. Test drive for acceleration, braking, steering.
  5. Check wiring & lights.
  6. Check condition of interior, especially dash and molding pieces.
  7. Invest in good factory shop manual.

Good luck.
