Sounds like valve seal...The seals are cheap but the labor to put them in is not...if you do it yourself it will save you a lot of money but take you an afternoon or so of work.

well, I would get a manual because there are technical specs that need to be adhered to. It's been a while since I actually performed this job so I would just stick with the manual or wait for someone in this forum to post more detailed directions.

Re: white smoke when starting

Up at my job we use a compression gauge hose with the valve stem removed, and a pressure regulator and our compressor to change those seals.of corse we use the valve spring tool to get the two little retainers off each valve, but its a real fast way to do them with the engine still in the car.also a good way to check for leaky valves.I dont put over about 80-90 psi into a cylinder tho, cause im afraid of blowing a head gasket

Re: white smoke when starting

White smoke sounds more like a head gasket. If it were the valve seals, the smoke would have a blue tint to it.

That is what was coming out of my tail pipes when I blew both of 'em on my 95 Trans Am.

right in that case it would be steam and not smoke, usually you can smell it when its oil.kind of a burning oil smell...as oppose to a steamed glycol odor

Re: white smoke when starting

cars tend to smoke when they are cold.

Be glad its not blue, and drive it till something bad happens. or it gets more noticable.

Re: white smoke when starting

I used to have the same problem with my car. i wasn't sure exactly what it was, and even still i dont. Every time I would start it, whether it be cold or hot, I would get white smoke for a while. It would only last from about 5-10 minutes, and would eventually go away until i started to hit higher RPM's then it would come back momentarily. After a while of this, I took my car in to get a standard tune up. Got the oil flushed out as well. Then afterwards I got some Pennzoil Fuel System Treatment and poured that in my gas tank, and haven't had a problem since then. So try that if you want and already havent, and see what happens then. It wouldnt hurt anything doing so anyway. Well good luck, hopefully this helps some.
