replacing cavalier's cigarette lighter

i have a 96 cavalier, and the whole lighter cylinder has pulled out of the dash, from repeated plugging & unplugging of cell phones, etc. i don't even know how to get to the back of the lighter. do i need to take off the whole dashboard? (actually, i'm already trying that and seem to be stuck--i took out all the screws i could see & still can't lift it--and am scared of the air bag)
i don't know much about cars, so please answer in PLAIN language. but please answer. i need HELP!!!

Re: replacing cavalier's cigarette lighter

if you take out that ashtray and pop off the cover of that little door thing that covers them both, you can see everything. just pull it so you have room and if you need to attach in another lighter housing. and slide it in, you were kinda sketchy, did it jsut slide out, in that case. cant you just push it back in

WTF are you talking about?.....the cig lighter is near the guage cluster right of the steering coulum... this person has a 96 ( 3rd gen)... the designe may be different for your 2nd gen.

That is exactly how my 92 is set up. It has bucket seats with floor shift, and the Cig lighter is just in front of the shifter, behind a door directly underneath the heater control. Mine does not work either, but I think mine is electrical

Jim.
