1997 transmission problem
I'm taking the engine out so I thought I could do something with the transmission at the same time.
Problem is: When braking like at a stop sign, "roll and go" something doesn't catch? engine revs high then it slamms into gear. TCC solenoid the problem? Should I or do I...rebuild? Nothing else wrong with it. Need for another 2 years about 100K miles. |

Re: 1997 transmission problem
TCC will engage only in 3 or 4, so not that.
simple things probably already checked: oil level low, clogged filter then: cooler checkball not seating allowing converter drain back (would be true probably only when starting engine after long resting period) reverse servo assembly seal cut or damaged damaged retainer and ball assembly(input shaft and housing assembly) forward servo: seals damaged input clutch seal damaged |

If the TCC doesn't disengage going from 3 to 2 will that have an effect of not engaging in to gear, therefore the engine revs for two seconds before engaging hard into gear?

Re: 1997 transmission problem
...I would not link the TCC operation to transmission band/cluch application. TCC application comes after and in addition to gear shifts. THere are reported conditions of stuck TCC and when braking to 0mph, this stalls the engine...not your problem. My saying is from the GM book and former postings, I did not experience these problems myself with that car. Former repairs I conducted myself on other makes related to delayed application were caused by fouled filter and worn out clutches (dark and burnt smell fluid).

Can I pull the transmission thru the hood or do I drop it down. I don't know if I can get the van that high.

Down is the way to go.
As an indication, these 5 pages describe the procedure for the 1991-1996 model. www.avigex.ca/xport/trans1.jpg www.avigex.ca/xport/trans2.jpg www.avigex.ca/xport/trans3.jpg www.avigex.ca/xport/trans4.jpg www.avigex.ca/xport/trans5.jpg |

Re: 1997 transmission problem
Got transmission on the sitting on the floor. Is the bell housing strong enough to support if I mount it using my engine stand? Also can I sit the bell housing on work bench to get at the inside?

Re: 1997 transmission problem
I trying to determine if pieces are good or worn and in need of replacement.
All of the hardened parts to the oil pump look good to me except for the aluminum cover. That has significant scaring and I think should be replaced or the pump wings would continue to widdle away aluminum. To me, the wings looked ok. Is there an upgrade, is this common wear for the oil pump? All the fine screens in valve body were clean with no metal flakes found. I may not know some of the correct terminology. On one of the "fourth clutch plates" a slight ring on pad the steel plate has a chip imbedded in surface causing the ring on other pad. Doesn't appear to be worn just discolored. Looks like a minor flaw from the factory? Not sure if this needs replaced. The 1-2 and 3-4 servo...the valve stem has slight visual wear but can't feel edges or burr similar to the oil pump wings. Should I replace stem and rudder seals? |

Re: 1997 transmission problem
I agree with trannyman52 the low sprag is probably shot. But on the other hand a 97 should have the updated low sprag
