Angry Wiper Problem on my 528I

Just discovered my wipers stop working. Went to turn them on and nothing happened. I tested them by checking fuse ans still nothing. The washer motor works but the wipers do not. EDo I need a WIper Motor or a relay?

Fred

check power to the wiper relay if it's good bypass the relay. If still nothing try lightly tapping on the wiper motor

Did you get the problem fixed?

I have a 97 528i and about a week ago the wipers stopped working...the stopped in the upright position aftre the passenger side one appeared to have gone out of the proper rotation...i was able to manually put the passenger side down to the rest position but not the drivers side...when i turned the car off and then on again only the drivers side one worked...i had it checked out and had to replace the wiper linkage console (part cost $300 canadian).

I hope your wiper problem was any easy and inexpensive fix...i'm curious on what the problem was...let me know.

What year/model BMW do you own?

Hi, King-
The wipers on BMWs from the 80s were famous for stopping in the upright position or not coming on at all, as well as jerky movements, etc. This is caused by excessive grease in the box that holds the contacts. There are two circuits: one to shoot it up, and one to park the blades afterward. When the contacts get greasy, they refuse to shoot up, or don't come down after having been shot. Or they just have random psychotic episodes.
This is solved by removing the box, drilling out the rivets, since they never intended for anyone to do maintenance since replacement is more profitable for the dealers.
Drill the rivets, pop open the box, clean the excess grease with a rag, and put some screws in it and reinstall.
I found more detailed instructions by hitting google and doing a search. There's plenty of automotive freaks (Especially the ones from NASA, god bless 'em) that have already posted detailed instructions on how to fix this problem.
Good luck.
Flunky
PS-Until it's fixed, I recommend Rain-X!

Re: Wiper Problem on my 528I

E38's and E39's both had a Service Bulletin concerning defctive wiper relays. The replacement PN's are:

All E38's..............relays K36 & K37 = 12 63 1 742 690

E39 to 8/97.........relays K37 & K37 = 12 63 1 742 690

E39 from 9/97......relay K11 = 61 36 8 364 501
