What do I need?
Hey, I have a Dual 1100 watt 12" two subwoofers to put in my explorer with a stock stereo system. I have a kenwood KAC 921 amp also. I have no clue how many watts this amp is. And its not new. What kind of amp and wattage do I need for this subwoofer? I really don't know much about audio. Let me know what you think I need or if what I have is legit.
Thanks, |

Re: What do I need?
well.. first off... that amp will work with those subs.. but very poorly. from what i gathered, the subs are 300 wrms (average) each, totaling 600 total (not 1100 watt, that is a max power rating) at 4 ohms impeadence each, and the amp is 180wrms x2 @ 2 ohms or 360 rms @ 4 ohms bridged. correct me if any of this is wrong.
anyways, if this is all right, wiring your subs together like most people do isnt possible because that would give you a final impeadence of 2 ohms and you amp isnt stable at 2 ohms bridged. so, basically that sticks you with running one sub per channel. not bad, but since the individual channels are rated at 180 rms @ 2 ohms each, then you will maybe only be getting 80-90 wrms @4 ohms. you will be at 4 ohms because that is what each individual sub is built at and that will be the final impeadence your amp sees for each channel. and since your subs are supposed to be around 300 wrms each (probably more like 200), you wont giving much power to the subs at all and your output will be pretty low, but yes it willl work. i would probably suggest about a 500 watt rms mono amp so the subs can get a 2 ohm load and get about 250 wrms each. check ebay, they have good amp deals if you stick with a seller with good ratings. Not sure anybody at all in this forum is going to like your subs much. but, i guess if youre tight on money and thats all the output you need and you dont really care about sound quality or reliability, theres no need to get anything else. but try and find an amp that suits the subs a little better. also when youre looking for amps try to stay away from like legacy, pyle, boss, sony, and other brands that people cant wait to get rid of cheap on ebay. you need an amp thatll last more than a couple months and these amps wont cut it. guys try not to be too hard on him haha |

Andon
Thanks for the reply, Is the Dual subwoofer I was talking about no good. I saw some ratings and discussions on them that were good. I really have no clue. I want to be cheap but don't want something thats no good. I would like to get away with something under $200. I listen to a lot of rock and would like it to be louder and have some bass. Nothing to loud or crazy.

Re: What do I need?
dual is definately not a good brand.. but i mean some people who havent been into car audio too long cant tell so i guess its up to you.. i just dotn want to see em blow on you in the first 6 months...
are you stuck with em though? if not then id say return em or sell em or whatever youre gonna do.. and you could probably sell the amp while youre at it. if you can get your money back how much would you have total for amp and subs? im sure people in here have suggestions for under 300 or so total that are much better. i can think of a couple but give us a price range after sub(s) and amp. |

If these are the subs I'm thinking about, Best Buy sells them. They're actually the best sounding subs that they carry in the store. Granted they're not the greatest, but for your purposes of a little extra thump, they should be fine.

Re: What do I need?
im leanin against the bandpass box mostly.. they are really only good for a certain short range of frequencies.. i think youll be missing out on a whole range of sound..
i dont know.. its up to you really. if the subs last you a while then youre good to go (minus the bandpass IMO) but im gonna stick with my orig. decision and suggest a trade |

Yea I mean you could probably get something a lil better for similar costs through ebay or something.....Lol I feel stuid for not reading the hyperlink above that was from the Best Buy website.....And yea bandpass isn't the greatest box in the world especially a pre-made one from Best Buy, but you have some options if you want some recommendations on somethin different for similar costs.

Re: What do I need?
I've talked to several Best Buy employees, and they say that Dual subs/amps/heads are by FAR the most returned products they have ever seen. Even BB employees think they suck, and most BB employees wouldn't even know "good" if it snuck up and bit them in the ass. I wouldn't put too much faith in those, if you can return them I would suggest you do so.

Did they mention what they were returned for? Was it like issues with the quality of the product, or did customers just not like them when they hooked them up? Lol I can't think of any Best Buy subs that are much better.

i would put RF punch 2s over them any day.. i think thats about the best that BB has to offer though which doesnt say much about their audio dept.

where is the best audio deal around?
Guys thanks for the input. Where would you guys suggest buying a sub? Second hand? Something that will last and doesn't cost too much. Should I just buy a 12" inch and then a box seperately. Something like a JL 12"?

Re: What do I need?
Take the duals back and sell your amp. Get an Adire Audio Tempest. You can get it from www.adireaudio.com Build your own sealed box between 3.5 and 5 cubic feet. The bigger you go the flatter the response (more even in the frequency response) up to 4.5 cuft. Since you listen to mostly rock, you can go with a smaller box down to 3.5 since rock doesn't have overexagerated sub 40hz bass lines (for the most part) like rap. To power it look up some amps on ebay like a profile ca600 or something that will put out 300-500 watts at 4 ohms. Let us know what you decide to get and well help you out to tell you how to set it up and everything.

Best sounding at BB? Uhhh NO. Even the PA Fubr's sound better, and the RF punch's. The Dual's suck hardcore, one of my friends has em! Plus you can hear them in the store. If they last you more then a couple month's you're probably setting a new world record! I'd never pay 1$ for them. Gross.
GROSS.
