1999 GA SE Struts

I get a vibration in the steering wheel when I brake. Had the alignment checked and it was fine (never had an alignment in the 5 years I've owned the car). The mechanic said the struts look like they may be going bad. I don't think the rotors are warped since they were just turned prior to this happening. Another anomoly is that last time I rotated and balanced the tires, the vibration went away - for awhile. Another problem is that as I slow down for a light and take my foot off the brake, I can feel the car shift a little from side to side - this happens at around 5 mph or so.

I would like to believe the mechaninc since they only charged $10 to look at the alignment and did not offer to replace the struts. Usually these places try to repair anything and convince you that it has to be done now.

Has anyone repalced struts on this model and if so, how was it? I know I need the spring compression tool, but that should be about it. Struts run $75 each.
