I've had my power steering pump replaced in my 2003 tacoma double cab!!! anyone else
I've had my 2003 double cab for just about 1 year. I kept hearing a whinney (power steering) sound and when I took it in the first time they replaced the power steering pump. When I got it back I still heard it, but just thought that's how is should sound since it was just "fixed" So our of coursiety I took it in again 5 months later and they said that the entire power steering system needed replaced (pump, hoses, lines, wires, etc.) luckely it was under warrenty, because it was a $2,000 job. They said there was metal in the system somewhere.....I'm just wondering if anyone else had power steering problems too?? Oh, a friend of mine has a 2004 minivan and he said it was recalled because of power steering problems.

Power Steering Pump Problems
I have a 2001 D-Cab Tacoma and at about 25K miles the pump went out and it was replaced under warranty. But get this; now at 70K miles it went out again.
But here is the bad part, more than a year has passed and they have quoted me $350.00 for a refub or $500.00 for a new one. While this is ridiculous, the fact that no one will admit that it is odd for lighting to stike twice like this is what really frustrates me. Also, the vehicle has never been off road, wrecked, etc. I am still seeking to negotiate with Toyota and will keep you posted. |

What are sings and symptoms of the powersteering going bad? It feels like it's become heavy lately, but would the cold cause that?

Powersteering Going Bad
In both of my cases the powersteering fluid leaked and sprayed on the inside of my hood. This was followed by a whine whenever I turned the steering wheel. Adding PS fluid made the whine disappear and steering more responsive.
However, both of my cases were due to PS Fluid leaking from the pump, which eventually had to be replaced. Definately have it checked at the dealer and be sure they document it on your receipt. |
