GSR tranny worth saving?

My 95 GSR tranny is going to shit and I've always wanted an LSD tranny. So I'm wondering wether it would be worth fixing my current tranny and converting it to LSD, or should I just buy a new LSD tranny.
(Sorry if the answer to my question is on older posts. The search produced too many results to read.)

Re: GSR tranny worth saving?

It would depend on your mechanic abilities. If you can handle taking the tranny apart and replacing some synchros etc then go for that, get a cusco LSD. Otherwise it woul dbe better to just get a ITR tranny.

alright, i got the years wrong, what I'm trying to get at is that there are two types of itr trannies, right? a newer one and an older one both with lsd but with different ratios. since I know hardly anything about gear ratios which would benefit my gsr?

Re: GSR tranny worth saving?

im pretty sure there isnt a newew and older itr tranny, i think its just the jdm one and the usdm one, the jdm have the lower ratio. jdm being better for performance, but either will benfit you

Re: GSR tranny worth saving?

I think that all the ITR trannies have the same gear ratios. The ITR tranny would only help your car if you are going to do cams and increase the rev limit. Otherwise the ITR tranny won't keep you in your peak power when you shift.

why wouldnt it keep you in the peak power? wouldnt the tighter gearing just mean you would get through the gear that much faster?

You will be narrowing the power band down with the shorter gears, unless you move the power band up in the rpm range, thus he would need cams and increased rev limit. When he shifts it will land him higher in the rpm range and he will not be able to take full advantage of the B18C1's power band.

Are you asking if ITR cams are a good idea? If so then yes but only if he is going to up the compression ratio, otherwise he won't see the full power increase from them. The motor will be slightly over cammed if he does not up the compression ratio. But they will still make an improvement
