Grinding Noise Front Left Wheel, when Reverse to the Left

Wheel turned to the left, close to the lock, in Reverse... pretty bad grinding noise. Goes away if I straighten out the wheel or shift to forward gear.

I didn't see anything making obvious contact. I was thinking dust shield over the brakes?

Anyone have the same problem or have any ideas?

What year? it could be the hubs going bad which is a very common problem. Could also possibly be bearings.

98 Sport 4x4 - 115K

Could possibly be the brake shield, but could also be the hub assembly. I have a 94 Explorer and when one of the hubs started going it would do that. If you have never replaced them after 115K miles you are one of the lucky ones. Also check to make sure the ball joints are alright. I have never replaced ball joints but I know that when they go they can make horrible noises. While your down there make sure nothing is out of place or disconnected. Could be something simple you never know until you take the wheel off. Good Luck

I just had 3 ball joints replaced (2 lower & 1 upper) and that tightened up the ride a lot (it was a death trap when I bought it - the ball joints were trashed!)

Maybe it is a hub, I'm just surprised, I figured a hub/bearing would be a constant "hummmm" noise...
