Superchager, wear and tear?
hello,
I have a 2000 3.8L daily driven mustang coupe (mods: K&N fipk, magnaflow dual exhuast). I'm getting tired of imports and want to obliterate them all with my stang. In order for this to happend I need a superchager. But, I'm afraid of the wear and tear. Can someone please explain it all to me? |

Re: Superchager, wear and tear?
Iam considering a procharger set-up for my 97 Stang V6 and iam not aware of any wear-tear problems....just make sure you buy an intercooled kit and run a safe amount of boost....

Re: Superchager, wear and tear?
i would'nt go with a super charger, it would be better if you threw 4.6 or 5.0 in to. besides superchargers are run off a belt, so it robs horsepower to make horsepower, they cost about 2k-2.5k- fuck you could buy a well prepped v8 crate motor around that price!

sorry a v6 just dosen't have any power, the car weight is too much for just 180whp. AS far as import tuners i beat a 2003 v6 mustang with my 99 accordcoupe, and the cobras are too much$$$, but i can take'em in a= http://www.bama.ua.edu/~hinso007/Pro...acingSmall.wmv
there is no hope for your v6, just trade it in on a gt. |

Re: Superchager, wear and tear?
My S-Trim has been on my Mustang for over 8 years. I had the rubber intake pipe slip and hit the blade few months ago, so the blades went through the engine. When I took the supercharger apart, everything was tight, and looked brand new except for the impeller of course.
The only real problem is the added stress on the front main bearing, but if you install a tooth pulley, you will not have to crank on the bearing so much, but then again they are kind of pricey. Go with an 8 rib, a 6 will slip.

Damn!Thats a bad little bastard. The coolest thing about that car besides obviously the motor is that it isn't all riced out. Good work man.

Re: Superchager, wear and tear?
idk if that accord was stock or not but if u beat one the v6 stangs it was most likely an auto, those are slow if u got a v6 it has to be a stick, and its 193 hp but its got 220 torque

Re: Superchager, wear and tear?
yeah also the main topic... ive looked at some superchargers for a v6, they can get up there pretty high in hp so if u wanna do that its prolly not a bad idea, but if u switched to a v8 motor youd have a lot more potential for power increase, cause then u could still supercharge or turbo that motor later

Aren't V6's notorious for blown head gaskets. Im forever finding posts where guys are having overheating problems because there V6 keeps blowing head gaskets. Seems to me adding a supercharger to somthing like this is just begging for it. I agree with the others I think trading off that V6 and jumping up to a V8 is not only gonna save you some trouble down the road but make you more power right off the bat. Hell a V8 with the right bolt ons is damn impressive without even talking about a supercharger.

Re: Superchager, wear and tear?
Jep,
Superchargers only affect "wear and tear" when you use the power. Under most (normal) operating conditions, your engine will operate as if no supercharger is installed. When you push on the go pedal, you will activate the S/C, and get the extra power you need (want). The 3.8L engines were not known for being really reliable, that all changed in about '98 when FMC altered the headgasket design. I have heard of zero problems since then. Check www.v6power.net for additional info, I think some of their members are pushing 250 RWHP with blown 3.8Ls and they are holding up well. |

Re: Superchager, wear and tear?
yeah the newer v6 engines are a lot better then the mid 90's ones, in terms of reliability and power

Re: Superchager, wear and tear?
Dude, you could always build your own turbo kit for the v6, but you gotta make sure you get a good intercooler. Turbos are cheaper and can be suited to any application. Just a thought
