Exhaust problem or is it normal????
I drive 97 vr4 and my cat-back is stock, and the thing is that my passenger side exhaust, there is nothin coming out. I mean no noise or air or nothing. I asked the dealer and they told me thats normal, but thats a dumass dealer talkin, i dont realy trust what they say.
What do u think is the problem or is all vr4s like that and that is normal?? |

Re: Exhaust problem or is it normal????
Um is your active exhaust set to tour? That blocks of one side of the exhaust to quiet it down. Also the stock exhaust system is not true duals. When the exhaust is set to sport the flow out of the passenger side isnt all that much.

There was a good write up the sport/tour settings on http://stealth.senecac.on.ca/archive.../msg00314.html
The drivers side is the sport mode exhaust, the passenger side is tour mode. The little mode switch on your dash activates a servomotor that is located on the side of the trunk on the driver side behind a small access cover. The servomotor pulls a cable which in turn goes to a valve on the exhaust system just behind the driver side rear wheel. You can see the valve operate by shining a flashlight on the top of the valve where an offset cam wheel is rotated about 180degrees by the cable. This valve often gets stuck in sport mode. It can often be fixed by removing the cable at the servomotor end and manually rotating the valve back and forth to free up the mechanism. When the car is turned off, the servomotor switches the exhaust to sport mode regardless of the switch setting. THis is done to cycle the valve and prevent it from getting stuck. Otherwise, the valve does not move unless your RPM exceed 3,500 RPM, where it always goes to sport mode. IF this system is working, you will definately hear a big difference in exhaust sound between the two modes. Also, at idle you should see exhaust gas switch from one side to the other depending on the switch setting.

The switch is to the right of the steering wheel. My Sport/Tour switch doesn't work, so smoke only comes out of my driver's side as well...until I come onto it, then it comes out of both sides.

Say I'm driving at 40mph and I throw it into second and hit the floor with the pedal. My dad has been behind me and says there are two puffs of smoke and the car squats and takes off. So under high hp, both sides work. I wish I could tell you more about that switch, but mine has never worked.

Re: Exhaust problem or is it normal????
You don't have the switch...you have a 97, the switch was taken out pre-96(not sure exactly what year, but my car doesn't have it either).
It still does this automatically, but we cannot controller it. As was said, it isn't true dual exhaust, the passenger side only opens up under heavy acceleration. It's normal.
