I have a stock 3kgt sl and was woundering how much boost my car can handle. If you have any sugetsions on what turbo kits would workd best for my car please do share. I also plan on getting an intercooler, and would like info on the best one at a resonable price. Thanks for the information and i'm srry if this has ben posted before.

Re: How much can I handle?

Read the FAQ especially NA modding guide and TT conversion...you can go to 3si.org and look at threads about TT conversions or single turbo conversions...there are plenty of threads there.
Stock pistons on the SL are 10:1 compression...so typically people don't boost really high without swapping pistons or upgrading fuel system and such.

Your 1996 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 is the 92nd out of the 315 that were made that year. Only 21 of which are exactly identical.

I think you misunderstood - you do not have to upgrade your pistons unless you plan on pushing a lot of boost. If you keep the boost low, you won't need the swap.

Ok, I don't think you're seeing the whole picture here. TTing your car isn't going to be as easy as buying a turbo kit and an intercooler and bolting them on. You're probably looking at around $2K worth of parts (fuel upgrades, ECU upgrades, etc, etc). If you get all the other parts but keep all your stock internals and compression, you could probably run 7-9 psi maybe? (someone correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not exactly sure)

Sounds about right. The ECU can stay and has to stay if you have an atx but if you swap out the base/SL ecu for the tt ecu then I've heard that there are considerable gains in hp.

Also very true, there is no real 'turbo kit' in production except for the vr-4 which is just a kit to upgrade the turbos already on there.

Look on 3si.org and see if you can't find some used parts for the conversion but it's going to be a bitch to get it all done, I just got done selling all my parts.
