radio removal/installation

Would anyone know how to remove a stock radio from a 96 intrepid and install an aftermarket one? Are there any guides online with details? Thanks!

Re: radio removal/installation

There is a trim bezel that surrounds the Radio and HVAC controls, That is clipped to the dash and pulls straight off. There are 2 hex screws to remove and the radio will pull straight out. Remove the ground strap bolted to the radio chassis, pull the antenna lead-in out of the back and remove the 2 harness conectors from the back of the radio.

There are aftermarket radios that will be what they call an "exact fit" size that are a DIN 1 1/2 size and will take up all of the space in the opening for a better look, because they fit GM and Chrysler vehicles, you just mount the appropriate mounts on the radio chassis and it will bolt in. Pioneer, Jenson, and a few others make these but they are a little pricey.

The regular size DIN 1 size radios will require an installation kit to fit the radio to the dash opening and that's available at any car stereo shop that does installs and are more or less a universal kit that covers many models, so you might have to snap or cut off a bunch of tabs except the 2 you need to attatch the radio to the dash. The instructions for mounting the radio to the install kit panel and to the dash are generally explicit enough to get it done correctly.

Both of the above radios will need to be wired to the car, you can get a wiring harness kit also at the stereo shops that you wire to the aftermarket radio's harness so you can hook it up to the factory wiring harness of the vehicle. Wiring color standards per radio manufacturers are the same anymore and the harness kits are usually conforming to that standard also so it's normally a connect the colors kind of deal just be sure to check the documentation for the radio AND the harness to make sure the the speaker polarity and power wiring matches with the color legends of both the radio and the harness before connecting wires. I prefer soldering and shrink tubing for the connections. Also if you car has the Infinity Sound System, you must connect the radio's Power Antenna to the harness kit even if the vehicle doesn't have a power antenna because this also switches on the Infinity Amp, not doing so will result in no sound.
