2000 Grand ABS Light and Break light are on.

If both the ABS and Break light is on, does this signify that something is wrong with either the ABS or the breaks? Or are these two just connected, i.e one turns on the other turns on. I am wondering if it just the wheel sensors that posibly need cleaning or if something could really be wrong. I don't notice any difference with breaking it appears fine but I have not been able to test the ABS as we don't have any snow here yet in MN. Thanks.

check the red brake light first. if the red brake light on it'll also kick on the abs light. check the fluid level and check for leaks. if the wheel speed sensor is bad, it'll only kick on the abs light and only after the car is moving ova certain speed. and i think you have a sensor on wach wheel, not on the rear diff. hope this help.

Re: 2000 Grand ABS Light and Break light are on.

it is most likely the ABS module. check to make sure your back breaks are working, if not then the ABS Module needs replaced.

place tranny in neutral and jack the rear up (both tires off the ground) then have someone hold the brake pedal in while you try to spin the wheels by hand.

The ABS Module will illuminate both the BRAKE and ABS light if bad.

Found out today, that I have the same problem with my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee as does thealy.

The funny thing is just 4 days ago I used my ABS in the snow just to test it, and it worked. Then 4 days later, I was climbing my driveway, and hit a bit of ice, and the tires began to spin and 3 seconds later the Amber ABS and the Red BRAKE light illuminated.

I wonder if my usage of the ABS 4 days earlier caused these indicators on my dash. I have an appointment with a Dealer on Monday, and I found out that this is not covered under my warranty.

The dealer said it would cost anywhere from $50 bucks to $1000 depending on what the problem ends up being.

If the problem is the ABS module, anyone know how much that would cost to replace?

ABS modules are expensive, my father in law had this replaced on his 98 Olds Acheiva - he got a quaote from the Salvage yard for $250 - that was used, I would hate to see how much it would be new.

The only way to diagnostic ABS Codes is with a ScanTool - if both lights are on first check the brake fluid and visually inspect the braking system look for ice build up on the calipers and rotors. Sometimes Ice can build and cause the Conventional Brake System to activate the light. The ABS light should only be activated because of a ABS problem. Sometimes wheel spin can cause the ABS Wheel Sensor to send a false code. Try disconnecting the Battery and see if resets the ABS. If it dosent, does the light come on right away or only when you are moving? If right away probally more towards the Modulator if when moving a wheel sensor. Hope this helps!

Re: 2000 Grand ABS Light and Break light are on.

Guys,

Thanks a ton for the input, I locked my breaks on purpose, and guess what, the ABS worked, and the lights went off. CAM7, I think may have been some ICE built up in the breaks.

thanks again for the suggestions
