Question about tranny fluid change.

A friend said I shouldn't change the transmission fluid in my 96 p71, because new fluid woulldn't transfer heat as well and thus gaskets wouldn't swell, thus causing leaks in cars accustomed to used fluid.

If that makes any sense to you...

basic question, should I change my car's tranny fluid, assuming it might not have a change? I don't know how Houston PD's maintenence schedule runs. The car has 127,000 miles.

Re: Question about tranny fluid change.

Never herd of anything like that before. It shouldnt matter what kinda car it is you should change your tranny fluid. Most Public Works Depts. chainge the fluid in the P71's about every 60,000. Ive changed mine in my 99 P71 and havent had the first problem...

Re: Question about tranny fluid change.

Whoever told you that is hoping to sell you a new trans SOON.

It's total B%LLSH!T.

Change your ATF every 30,000 miles and use ONLY Mercon V fluid, nothing else.

Also, the factory trans pan gaskets are re-useable as long as they are not torn or badly bent. They are steel impregnated rubber (high quality) gaskets. DO NOT use the cork crap included in the filter kits.
