Hello, I'm new to the forums and signed up because google.com isn't helping my 1989 Grand Marquis dilema.
I don't know where to begin, but here goes. Basically, the check engine light comes on and stays on after about 15 minutes of driving (sometimes not that long) The engine light comes on when I come to a stop after a while of driving, goes off when the car is moving again The pcv valve tube ending is whistling at me and isn't connected anywhere, and nothings helping me in figuring out if it even connects or what? I bought a new PCV valve but havn't gotten to replacing it yet New air filters, new spark plugs, new spark plug accessories/wires, new gaskets all the way around. (Explanation of all below) Got a 1989 Grand Marquis GS, 5.0 L, which recently, my head gasket blew, so me and my sisters boyfriend (mechanically inclined) tore the entire top half apart, and replaced it, new gaskets for te valve covers, heads, (got the heads cleaned and tested as well from a machine shop), and intake gaskets, put it all back together, new spark plugs, spark plug wires, rotor cap, she runs great! no problems whatsoever, except about 15 minutes of driving, when she hits bumps or bounces a little, the Check Engine light comes on (never has before the teardown, believe it or not), Knowing that Check engine is a crock of crap, I semi-ignore it, but they are bright! so when I come to a stop at a stop light or just to a halt, the engine light cant decide whether to stay on, so it pulses at me, and when the car is moving again, it goes off The PCV Valve end tube isn't connected to anything and is whistling, does this connect to something, and could this be the entire problem? Oil is good, just changed it Transmission fluid is a LITTLE low but nothing serious Power steering hose was replaced, no more leaks, so it's full Brake fluid is fine o2 sensor, no clue, probably bad, fuel filter, going to get to that soon, im basically rebuilding the entire car on a limited budget and time, but would like the lights to stop :-) I'm sure a ground here and there wasn't connected, it was a rushy type job considering the weather (rain). I read somewhere about a cheap device which gives me the code of the problem when a check engine light is on? Is that the case or do I have to drive 45 minutes (to a friend, who has the computer system) to figure out the exact problem, My hopes are that the Check Engine light will take care of the engine |

Buy a code reader for about $20. If you plan on keeping car for a year or more, it is a very worthwhile investment. 1989 model year is older connector type.
Intermittent codes may simply be loose connector on a sensor (especially after rebuild work). You should be able to pull codes from memory as well as current error codes. |

Re: 1989 Marquis GS 5.0 > Got alot of questions!
Please explain what you mean by pvc end hose. The pvc hose should connect to source of vacuum and then to the pvc and if it whistles it sounds as if you have a vacuum leak-good luck

Sounds to me like your internal computer is malfunctioning. This happens a lot in older cars, and the little "check enginge" light isn't reporting a problem; it's just screwed up. You could replace the computer, but it's a pain in the ass. I've had cars that did this before. It's easier just to ignore it.

Some aftermarket universal PCV valves have place for extra hose at top of out. It should be stopped up with plug supplied.
Why not buy a new PCV valve and replace it. They are only a couple of bucks. This may solve your issue. |

while checking the PVC also check the filter located under the pvc valve, sometimes they get overlooked.
