Subwoofa in the car. Yay or nay? (AF poll)

a few of my mates have subwoofa's in their car. One has a shit 87 nissan and I see no point in putting the amp, plus the sub in there. Dave has a 88 ford falcon, and his system is OK. James has a 94 Holden Commodore S pack, and it sounds good, and does justice

I'm thinking of an amp and sub in my car (96 Holden VS Commodore, it would do justice)

But what do you think? pointless? (I play heavy metal in my car, not that fake bass bullshit doof doof crap)

Waste of money? should I not bother (it's a serious thing to me, i'm saving up at the moment).

Who here has one? Who hates em?

Re: Subwoofa in the car. Yay or nay? (AF poll)

i'm thinking of a amp (a decent one, not a 2000 dollar pioneer one), and a 12inch sub in a cabnet in the boot (in the middle) facing me, so I can pull the middle thing down in the back seat, and that will make the sub in the back visible to me, and the bass facing right out.

but I dunno....

i'm up for about 500 bucks, maybe 600 getting it installed.

Fuck yeah. I used to have a 500W amp and 2 x 10" subs in my Corolla. Then again, it depends how important tunes are to you. I absolutely love music and generally have it with me everywhere I go.

Fuck paying to get it installed. It's easy as hell.

$600 should give you a nice bass hit. Shop hard during the XMas sales, keep the design simple and I think you'll be very pleased.

Of course!
The thing about subs is, it isn't always just doof doof crap, I find subs actually make the song sound better if they have the sensitivity down a bit (sure, I like bass but constant loud bass gets to me eventually).

I think you will find that it wont matter what way you face your sub, bass is non-directional so if you face it at you, it wont make a difference from facing it to the rear of the car.

Just make sure you get quality, theres nothing worse than a cheap sub at full bore....

P.S, Install it yourself, it is easy. the 12v socket on the amp goes the the battery, ground it on the cars body on a surface where there is no paint, remote to the remote wire on your head unit (all the ones I have done have been blue wires) with a switch or your ignition along the line (if your head unit won't turn off your amp when the head unit is off) then the interconnect lead (2 wires joined with 4 plugs) goes to the head unit. If you have installed a head unit before, the amp and sub will be easy as.

Yeah subs are non-directional so you'll get basically the same "doof" everywhere. Make sure you get quality, and don't overboost - treble is also good. In fact, a bit more treble than bass is usually best, as long as it's not tinny.

Don't spend more on the stereo than you did on the car

I agree; I have 2x12" subs with an 800w amp and although I don't blast it all of the time, I still like to have the power on tap. Comes in handy when you're riding with the windows down on the expressway!!

Re: Subwoofa in the car. Yay or nay? (AF poll)

I would just spend it on performance mods. The previous owner had an amp and sub in my car, spend about $1000 on it, but I didn't want them, so he kept them and knocked $500 off the price of the car just for that.

Doof, doof, how funny! If you listen to REAL heavy metal, not that 3 chord crap, the bass is a supporting instrument. I'd say dump the amp and get some real car stuff, like speed equiptment. Headers and a lumpy cam are the best music for a car enthusiast. Doof, doof is for posers.

Re: Subwoofa in the car. Yay or nay? (AF poll)

Personally I love subs. But since you listen to heavy metal you should just stick with good speakers like 6x9's. In heavy metal the basslines are basically constant so it would get very nerve-wracking listining to it with subs. imo

No its not, i say subs are good, especially when you play heavy metal, What are you talking about? "3 chord crap"? "3 chord crap" often has the bass playing the root note only. "Real" heavy metal has some good bass. So therefore, subs are good!

go for it. i always play metallica/slayer/sepultura/godsmack, etc. and it sounds pretty sweet with the subs (2 10" Kenwoods plus pioneer speakers all around).

I've got 2 12's in under my rear seats. Doesn't carry like most systems do, but it does provide a surround sound type environment inside the cab.

Do it!
