Turbo vs super

Now, say I had a 2001 GT and wanted to add something to the engine.

I'm confronted with two options, the Supercharger or the Turbocharger.

What do you say?

supercharger vs turbo

you can't add a gtp supercharger to a gt engine without swapping the whole engine. you'd have to go with a centerfugal superchager kit if you wanted to add supercharger. i recomend a turbo kit though if you want a boosted gt.

Re: Turbo vs super

Okay, that makes sense. Because the Eaton M90 is roots type, eh?

I'm learning!!

Now I am leaning towards the '98 GTP. I thought i would have to go to the GT in the '01 to get a price i could afford, but then i realized the only thing that I liked about the '01 over others is the HUD.

Re: Turbo vs super

im speaking in the most latent and general terms here when i say that Turbos tend to give you a hell of a lot more boost and overall HP then Superchargers but they tend to be a lil more pricey. hey if you wanna wax corvettes and vipers. just throw a twin turbo on your grand prix lol

Have you priced either? The turbo will cost $3,000.00 by it's self. Now add the extras.
If you had a GTP you could make it alot faster for around $500.00
Turbos are great, but that's a lot of cash to put out.
Good luck.

Re: Turbo vs super

True, but if I can get a GT for 5,000$ less then a GTP, it might be worth it.

I read somewhere that because they are belt driven, the superchargers can rob horse power?

good luck finding a GT 5 grand less than a GTP...the ones i was looking at were only about $1000-1500 less. the only reason i didnt get the GTP (and boy did i want to) was because of the insurance...god i hate new jersey.
and yes S/Cs are less efficient at providing more horsepower than turbos because turbos run off exhaust gas pressure (natural byproduct of internal combustion anyway) instead of extra belts directly on the engine which rob some HP

yea, the difference in prices is only about $1000...i got my gtp in awesome condition for only $5,300 on ebay. clean history and everything. you might check that out. i would recomend doing a car fax and an independent inspection to be sure its as good as they say before you sign a check. it will cost you about a $120 or so but worth it.

yea, my understanding is that turbo's tend to put out more boost (i've never owned or driven a turbo vehicle) according to the numbers i've seen, the kits for the gt put out about 14 psi (a stock gtp putting out 8psi and up to 11 psi with a 3.4 pulley) but from my understanding there is a moment where the turbo has to spool up where as the supercharger's boost is almost instantanious. i think there are trade offs to both. i don't know how modifiable a turbo kit would leave you compared to a modded supercharger either. just some factors to investigate.

Re: Turbo vs super

supercharger only "robs" horsepower at very low rpm. Once you get the thing going a little though, it goes!

Ive readed some great things about the CSC kit offered by zommer @ www.zzperformance.com and have seen a vast HP increase with that kit on the GTs and even the S.E.

Re: Turbo vs super

It cost so much extra loot to get a GTP fast tho... i mean dont get me wrong they are quick 0-60 in 6.9 stock. The 97 im getting from a friend has a 3.4 inch pulley, open cone, u bend and resonator removed, and thats it. I am only 19 so i have no dinero to blow. I can prolly toss 500-700 dollars into engine mods. When a CAI cost 200$ that doesn't leave me with shit... I dont care about quarter mile times, cuz i will never in my life take my car to a drag track, 0-60 is more important cuz most racing i do is at a traffic light..
