how do i drive my GST

okay i have a 99 GST manual. only thing done to it is its been lowered about an inch with shocks and spings (not by me)

i got smoked today by an other style jetta with no performance mods, a 2 foot high aluminum spoiler and half of the car was green and the other half orange. now that car has NO business touching any turbo DSM right?

my problem is that i kept spinning my wheels until 3rd grear, and got lots of wheel hop. i didn't nutral drop it, i just floored it off the line. how do i stop the wheel spin? do i roll off the line then gun it?

i refuse to belive an old jetta can beat my car.

oh yeah i'm still learning to drive manual, rough shifts still but i can get around...

a fwd and awd car takes practice getting use to when racing.the right rpm, clutch release, and throttle control needs to be put togather to work right.practice launching your gs-t at the track or on a road that has no traffic out somewhere.thats about the best advise i can give you there and with the vw thing a friend of mine has a 88 golf hatch with a vr6 that is pretty impressive.

dont ever under estimate your rival!

yeah if your still learning manual, itll be hard to race. WHen i was first learning, i was driving my friends 93 mr2 which is moderatley modified, prolly pushin 170 -180 hp. ANyways, I was sitting at a stoplight and some D-Bag in a Saturn pulls up(ricer Saturns are gayer than everything else in the world) Long story short, i dump the clutch too fast and kill it. Felt like a dumbass for the whole day

Re: how do i drive my GST

Learn how to drive well before you want to race well. You know the problem... don't go full throttle and spin tires, take it easy off the line.

Re: how do i drive my GST

Learning how to drive a new car is like just meeting someone new... You have to get to know them before you can put any weight on the relationship.

Take your time. You'll get the hang of it.

Re: how do i drive my GST

after you spin the tires so many times , you can almost predict and feel when there about to spin. once you get the feeling that there going to spin , make corrections.

Re: how do i drive my GST

LOL... you guy's are funny...

try dumping the clutch from 3000 RPM. see how it feels. when you feel the clutch start to grip, feather the throttle up untill you are at full engage then floor it. 1st will come thru fast and by the time you are giving it full juice, you should be about 1/2 a second away from shifting. realize that towards the top of 1st there is going to be some wheel spin. shift at redline if possible. for 2-4 shift @ 6k. also you may spin at the top of 2nd as well. i spin all the way at the top of 3rd on a good day

try that for a while then start inching up the start rpm. i like to drop it around 3200, which the car seems to like in all of my setups. there is no boost on the engine yet, so that may have to do with it.

most of all: practice practice practice

Re: how do i drive my GST

holy crap yes practice in a abandoned street or something, or a big parking lot. I drop it from like 3.3 or so and feather lightly for the whole of first gear, and once i feel it stop spinning, WOT. With good practice on the launch i kept up with an auto G35 sedan (beat it through 1st and 2nd, then it started pulling). Good launches are hard in a fwd....wish i had a slut instead of a friend when i go from a dig...

Re: how do i drive my GST

Well, im not sure on the front well dr but if your car is still pretty stock your turbo shouldn't spool up that quick. so i wouldn't launch any higher than 1500 rpms so your car has time to grip and take off. Don't think that jetta's arent fast my buddy has a vr6 with intake and exhaust. His is fast he threw me into the seat. It was unexpected so just be careful,

Re: how do i drive my GST

i also own a limited Jetta GLI that is quick as hell. no top end, but with a 1.8 turbo 6 speed and the only mod being a Carbon Fiber CAI it is VERY quick off the line.

tou want to fing the RPM that you can drop the clutch and not imeadiatly break the wheels. 1500 is WAY to slow. 3000-3500 is where you will end up.

1500 RPM??!!
are you crazy?
my car just starts moving around 1500 RPM...
i would say 1500 RPM is a fast crawl even in a FWD...
