DRL but no hi/lo beams

hi all, kid's truck is a 97 s-10 v6. he jump started someone last week and now we have daytime running lights all the time (good) but no hi or low beams with the switch (bad). i've checked for loose wiring, checked the switch with a 12 volt light tester (got 12v when switch is turned on) and bought a new relay (someone on this list thought the three relays in the glovebox were as follows (left to right) Fuel pump, horn, lights--- tried the new relay in all three--no change)). the fusible links on the drivers side wheel well feel ok-- not sure if one of these is for the lights or if there is another one somewhere else in the wiring. anyone have the light circuit wiring diagram for a 97?. i only have an owners manual from a 96 blazer but that says the headlamp wiring has an over load protection and the wiring needs checked. Is it possible to make the DRL brighter or is that a bad idea electrically-wise?? thanks, keith

Re: DRL but no hi/lo beams

Sorry that I don't have a wire diagram for you, but I just wanted to say, thank your kid for being nice enough to give someone a jump.
And then show him how to hook the cables up the right way

Hook the red wire to the + side of the battery, and hook the black side to a ground, pretty much any where on the motor where you see bare metal. Not to the - side of the battery.

Then he shouldn't have this problem (or worst) happen next time.

you must have raised a good kid

Re: DRL but no hi/lo beams

drl's on a 97? i thought that was started in 98 but then again i dont pay much attention, anyways my drl's (98 so wireing is totally different thank you gm) are my low beams, but if his arent, like overboard said make sure he knows not to ground to the - poast because this can happen and it can even go as far as frying the computer, and then do a search for wireing diagram for 97 s 10 if you dont come up with nothen by the time im out of class tomorrow ill look it up

Re: DRL but no hi/lo beams

96 is the first year of drl.

Did you take some fuses out of the fusebox and look at them, or just wiggle them? There is definetely a drl fuse (but I doubt that one is blown), I'm pretty sure there's a headlight fuse too. Check and see if it's blown. You should have extra fuses in there so it's an easy fix. I have a 96 w/ the same fuse box so I'll take a look and get a # if I get a chance.

DRL's work fine. i found the fuse for this in the fuse box. i didnt find any headlight fuse but then again i'm useing a 96 blazer manual so i'm sure theres lots of differences. i'll check all the fuses to rule that out. when i hit the light switch all the running lights come on (inside and out)like they are suppose to. i just dont get brighter lights then the DRL's. also when I try the high beam i get no change. someone at work suggested checking the grounds coming off the headlight wiring and maybe running another one just to check and/or eliminate a bad ground due to improper battery jumping. I "think" i taught him the correct way to jump a battery but its been awhile. the other car belonged to some girl so i'm sure he wasn't just doing it to be nice!!

Re: DRL but no hi/lo beams

I still haven't gotten out to the lot, but if I remember correctly, isn't the headlight fuse one of thise big metal-looking ones in the fusebox?

#3 fuse checked ok as well as the two big metal fuses. if i can locate a wiring diagram, i'll check some wiring in a couple of days. also was mentioned to check the lights themselves, maybe one bad one holding both out. the kid was having withdraws so i told him as long as its during the day he's ok to drive it.

i have a 86 Grand National that is my fun nice weather car -- bigger turbo, intercooler, injectors, etc.... lots of fun. and a 87 Turbo T WE-4 which looks just like a GN and has the same v6 turbo intercooled motor. thats my daily driver -- almost stock and running strong at 108,000 miles(knock on wood!!)

Re: DRL but no hi/lo beams

I'm sorry we couldn't help find the problem. It seems very peculiar, but maybe you're right and the lights have gone bad, it's funny you'd think they wouldn't go out at the same time. I think this would be the easiest fix, because who knows where a short in the wires mights be. Also, do your drl's turn off when you turn your light switch on?

Aren't the turbo t's the rarer gn's with the t-tops?

Re: DRL but no hi/lo beams

on one of the speakers, there may an automatic headlight switch..it's simply a dusk to dawn sensor..anyways, try covering it and see if the lights come on..if they do, then all your relays and fuses are good..it may simply be a fried switch...

fixed!!!

fixed the problem. it turned out to be the headlight switch. i had probed a terminal that went off and on with the switch but i was actually checking the terminal for the parking lights. pulled the dash farther apart and did more checking with a test light and jumper wire and found the bad switch terminal for the actual lights. thanks everyone for the help. keith
