1986 transission

yep,
i got a 1986 caprice engine; chass nr tells me it's a LG4 305 ci V8 4Bbl; transmission is four speed; 3.06, 1.63, 1, 0.77
probably a wise guy can point me to the right direction ; I want to find out which type this transmission is;
on the other hand, some info of a reliable floor-shifter also would be welcome

You have the 700R4 transmission. Earlier units (83 and some 84) were lucky to make it to 30k miles.

My 84 went to 160k on the original (and the 100 on the re-build, and another 100k+ on a GM reman).

Speaking of transmission woes, I've had some problems with my caprice automatic transmission. Its a 1990 police package, so I know its a 4L60. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas.

My dad had it worked on a few years ago, and it has not been as good since. It seems to have some hesitation before shifting from first to second. Sometimes, the engine will rev pretty high and the transmission still will not shift up, and will only shift up after I backed off on the accelerator a little and then started to put my foot back down again. The transmission also seems to have a little hesitation from the time I press on the gas peddle (from a complete stop) and when the car starts to accelerate. I think this is in the transmission, not the engine, but maybe I'm wrong.

Anyways, any help would be appreciated.

Try adjusting the throttle velocity (TV) cable first.

What is the TV cable and where is it located? Is it part of transmission or engine?

The TV cable attaches to the carb linkage and goes to the transmission. Adjustment is straightforward in that all you do is unhook the cable from the carb linkage, pull the cable end towards the front of the car and then release. Reconnect the cable to the carb linkage.
