How much oil are you leaking? Is it leaking from the top or bottom?
If it's not leaking much, I wouldn't worry about it. Just check/add oil when needed. If the leak is underneath, then that means the oil is not gettting all over the engine and other parts, and thus doesn't pose as much of a problem. I'm guessing the shop told you it would cost $400-$500 to replace? This was the case with my Intrepid, and the mechanic said the reason the cost was so high was due to the fact that a lot of stuff would have to be removed to replace the oil pan, so you're really paying for labor. He recommended I not have the repair done and just add oil (I was losing maybe a quart every 3,000 miles). The leak never worsened and so I saved a lot of dough. I would ask your mechanic (since he's seen the car and knows it best) what needs to be replaced, and if you think you can do the labor, then more power to you.

Re: 1995 MUSTANG OIL PAN LEAK...troubleshooting
It depends on where the leak is. If the whole pan gasket needs to be replaced then the motor needs to be lifted either out of the engine bay or high enough off the K-member so someone who knows what they are doing can drop the pan enough to replace the gasket. If its a rear main, they a lot of times if can be done a little easier, but the motor will still need to be rasied up off the K-member some.

oil pans are a bitch, you gotta jack up the engine and restle with the pan and then if you gotta replace the gasket its even more of a bitch. so umm have fun i would recommend having a mechanic do it if u can afford it

Easier than it seems
I'm only 17 and have crappy tools but this wasnt a big problem for me. I had a bad leak on my 94 GT and I dreaded fixin it for awhile cause I thought that you would be liftin the motor or droppin the k member but you dont have to do any of that stuff. I just dropped the pan and carefully removed the stock gasket and very carefully put the new ones in. Dont forget to drain the oil first. It was still a bit of a pain tryin to get the seals around the bottom of the main seals and gettin the gaskets to stay when u were lignin everything back up to bolt thte pan up. After I was done I didnt have any problems and my leak was 100% fixed. And the total cost was only what I payed for the fel pro gaskets which was pretty cheap. Too make sure though I'd pressure wash the bottom of the car and lay sum cardboard under the motor for a night. This will let you know if its still leakin. Good Luck
