Re: Undercarriage rust protaction Cost
I had my 2000 silverado rust proofed and under coated and if i remember correctly it cost me somewhere about $400 , give or take a little. I had it done at ming , not sure if you are in canada or not. I know that there is a zebart here as well, not sure if that is an American company too.

Re: Undercarriage rust protaction Cost
I'm not sure what year truck you have, LS, but in the 2000 owners manual it says not to rust coat the underneath of the truck. The manual says that there is a factory seal coat there already and if you add another one it could create pockets and traps for water and salt to cause rust prematurely. How much of this is bullshit, I don't know. I was going to do mine before I read that in the manual. I've been under my truck since then and there is a coating on the frame, I suppose that it is the factory rust protection, but who knows.

Re: Undercarriage rust protaction Cost
I say if you can't see/feel anything . most likely nothing is there. I know of no rust proof type material that is put on the frames or under body from factory. They would not make any extra money that way, they already charge too damn much for them as it is never mind all the "extra options" that should be free considering the prices we pay. I know for a fact that my 2000 Ls 4x4 had nothing as for rust proofing or under coating on it when i purchased it used last year. And as for trapping pockets of air or water/salt or what ever , i say that is a load of crap . Any reputable place the applys undercoating to a vehicle washes the underside of the vehicle first then lets it sit to dry, at least that is what they do where i got mine done.

Re: Undercarriage rust protaction Cost
Just my
worth, but, I've always just black spray bombed the entire bottom of my truck every 2 years if not every year. I've never had any rust problems. I imagine if I had it undercoated I wouldn't have to do it but, I kind of enjoy it. Just have to make sure there are no other vehicles near by and use a good size fan to keep the air moving. Otherwise it gets really stinky and you can end up with overspray on nearby vehicles.Again, just my worth.

Re: Undercarriage rust protaction Cost
This summer I carefully cleaned and rubbed all the surface rust off my jimmy's frame and foam-brush applied rust-olium's "extreme rust" protective primer. I let it sit overnight and the next few days I brush applied a few layers of flat black paint and it looks really nice. It only took me about 1.5 hours total. Every other jimmy/blazer/whatever I see has bad looking frames that look like they've been ginding over a snowpile of salt. Mine looks mint from the factory and I know it's 100% durable.

In the past few years auto manufacturer's have used zinc plated panels and various other means to help with rust prevention. I would never even consider applying undercoating to one of my vehicles. Only my -slacker

Greetings,
When I bought my new 2004 Chevy in August, I asked the service people about undercoating. They told me that Chevy uses a wax base coating that is sprayed on the frame and underbody. Its not the old type of tar/oil based undercoating - but a wax base instead. They suggested not to undercoat for at least 2 to 3 years until the wax base breaks down. Also the idea of "in door" coating is no longer needed because of the galvanizing and/or nickel zinc coating process on interior components. Just what they told me. White Lightening |
