snow tires for 4WD Tacoma

I'm thinking about getting snow tires for my 1995 4WD Tacoma. I've heard that narrower tires get better traction in snow. I currently have 31x10.5R15s on 15x7JJ rims. If I buy new rims and go with a narrower tire, what are my alternatives? The manual looks like it indicates P225/75R15 on 15x6J rims for a 4WD. Can anybody confirm that, and is that the smallest that I can go?

Thanks!!

Re: snow tires for 4WD Tacoma

Personally I like a wider tire ... for one I like how it looks and for two I think that it gets better traction in the snow. (living in Northern NY, we get lots of snow and ice) ... I have 31" inch BF Goodrich All-Terrains on my 99 and would recommend them to anyone..

I've got 33 x 12.5 x 15's on my stock 98 rims, only rubs if you turn the wheel all the way to the left. I'm only running the 33's for the winter months, then back to the 31 x 10.5. x 15's.

Re: snow tires for 4WD Tacoma

i went yesterday and put a set of wildtrack ltr's on my 99, 265/75/r15's for 327 bucks. that was the best deal i could get on a new set. i did have the wrangler rts on and it was gonna cost me almost 400 bucks for 3 new ones, so i switched to the wildtracks, they are made by cordova. i drove it in the snow last night and never slipped a tire. i think they are awsome.

Re: snow tires for 4WD Tacoma

A narrower tire will cut through the snow (like a pizza cutter) while a wider tire will float over it. What is better depends on how deep the snow is and what is under it. From my experience (which includes a lot of snow), there you will see very little difference between 1" of tire width. You will only notice it when you go between something like a 9" wide tire and a 12.5".

On a Tacoma the 31x10.5 tire is excellent in the snow - I would not go any smaller. The provide excellent drivability on snow covered streets and track well on trails. The BFG All-Terrain TA's are a GREAT snow tire and give wonderfull all around performance - take a hard look at them as a year round tire.
