84 Headlight Motor Problem

This started couple weeks ago, everytime I pull the switch to turn the headlight on, only the one on the driver side goes up, but the one on the pass. side stays down. I can make it go up, by turning the knob on the motor, but as soon as I push the switch to turn them off, they both go down; the one on the driver side goes down fine, but the other one goes down slowly, making nasty/grinding noises, but it goes down , an once is completely down, it keeps on making the noises for a couple seconds, and then it stops. Could it be the gears? How easy it to get that fixed? Should I try to do it myself, or take it to a service/repair shop? Thanks a lot for all of your help, and dont forget to wave!

the drive motor is shot, it needs to be replaced. as far as cost, im afraid i cant help ya there, dont know off the top of my head.

Alright, i put both of the headlights in the open position and then I disconnected the motor wire plugs, LOL, that works for now, actually, it looks kinda cool, u know? Ohh well, Im gonna leave it like that untill i can figure out how i can get that motor running again. Cuz i wanna concentrate in the powerplant of my vette right now. I had a similar problem with my 84 Vette. I replaced the motor myself (nothing to it). The motor cost me $150.00

how hard was to replace to motor? Was it a pain in the a**? How long did it take u? just an aproximation, cuz I might have to do that. I saw the rebuilt motors @ ecklers.com, and they r running for about $150.00 too, or I can even send them mine, and then they will rebuilt it for me. Thanks a lot.

It was a piece of cake! It took me 45 minutes. You need to:
1. Remove the headlight assembly and motor together.
(Don't try doing it while the motor is still attached to the hood. Place the assembly on table, get confortable, have a lemonade while your at it)
2. Remove the lightbulb casing to get to the screw that holds the motor.
3. Remove and replace the motor.
4. Assemble the lightbulb casing
5. Install the headlight assembly, test and go. (that simple)

I can't direct you to any site for pictures. I looked high and low and found no instructions. Not even the repair manuals have instructions.
I ventured on replacing it as if with blind folds and found it was very easy.

Wow, that sounds pretty easy. I was kinda scared when I had to replaced my fuel pump, and I found out it was pretty simple too, I have also replaced fuel filter, alternator, spark plugs and wires with distribuitor cap, belt tensioner (I broke that one myself), installed the racing chip in the computer, and I will be installing stinger mufflers next week. Ive had my Vette for over a year now, and seriously, the more I work on it, the more I like it! I dont know why. Im writing down your steps, one by one, but Im gonna put down bud light instead of lemonade, LOL. I looked everywhere, I have repair manuals also, but they dont tell you how to do that kind of job. Thanks a lot man, I'll let you know how everything turned out.

This is for the 88 to 94 or 96... but the procedure for removing the motor is very similar...
