Why Can't I Hate This Car??

God knows I've tried to....and with almost 3 years and $3000 worth of repairs on my '98 Aurora, one would think it an easy thing to do. I've owned 9 cars in my lifetime - all pre-owned - and have hated about half of them after a very short while. I could deal with the occasional and sometimes catastrophically expensive repairs that all cars eventually seem to need. But it was the constant "needling" by a few (the stalling at every light, or failure to start at the worst possible times, etc.) that drove me to fits of revenge...like winding the engine out to redline and beyond. One car made me so mad after stalling at every intersection, that I once "powershifted" it (manual trans) from 1st to 2nd after redlining it...without the clutch. It actually made me feel good to hear the gears grinding up to a fine powder. I am the only driver here who has had these 'episodes'? {"Take THAT, you piece of #$%&!!"}

But I just can't seen to hate (or punish) my Aurora for nearly 3 years worth of "needling"....namely the continuous stalling which seems to have plagued more than one Aurora owner on this board. There have been other 'little things'....like the gas gauge periodically not working, the SES light coming on and off about a hundred times times a month, and now the latest; the speedometer not working.

I have had many suggestions from other owners here about what to do (which I do appreciate), and many of them have really made alot of sense. But, nothing seems to have worked.

Yet, when I am behind the wheel of this vehicle (and it is running right), I cannot imagine driving anything else. The jet-like cockpit and instrument panel still gives me a thrill....the luxurious grey leather seats...the handling...the ride....(this is the only car I've ever driven over 100mph and felt perfectly safe)...why, why WHY can't this car be the pefect one? It is everything I ever dreamed of in an automobile, but has become a maintainance nightmare.

Where are the mechanics...the "service technicians"....who truly understand this car and are able (or even willing) to fix it? I am so tired of 'the look' I get everytime I ask somebody at a dealership or shop about Oldsmobile Auroras. How could General Motors build something like this and put it out for public consumption?

I can't think of parting with her - not yet, anyway. But when I do, that will be it for me and the American made automobile. My brother drives an Acura 3.5 RL, the closest thing I have driven to my Aurora. He bought his used, a year older than my Aurora, and paid double what I did, but he has not had a single problem with it.

I really do need some comforting here before I finally lose it and go out to the driveway and......and......

Your best bet would be to go to any Olds dealer that is still in business,
and after that, to a Cadillac dealer. They know the Aurora better than
any other repair shop.

It's because it's such a beautiful car. Some things are too beautiful to let go without a struggle. The Aurora is one of them. The Aurora captures a beauty that no other car in the world has. I don't know what it is about it, but the car drives me crazy, I love it!

Because the Aurora was designed to be so overwhelmingly ‘driver-centric’ it comprises all the elements of the fabled ‘sirens song’. It’s svelte, slinky, alluring and sensuous to look at, the satisfying rumble and power of the Northstar further enhances the spell. The seats embrace you and the ride beckons another adventure. So we succumb, oblivious to the outrageous amounts of money and time for repairs just to keep the encounter going. We are doomed!!

Damn you guys sound like poets -I feel like it's Open Mic night! lol....Do you molest your aurora at night? It's a real good car, great silky power, not real fast but powerful, real nice ride and unusually decent handling considering the awesome ride - but oh man, I agree 100%, the reliability and electronics are just aweful!
