Change oil and low oil light on in 2003 grand am
Hi all,
I have a 2003 grand am and just had an oil change about 1200 miles ago. The change oil light is on and periodically the low oil light comes on but will go off it you restart. The change oil light will not come off. I know the low oil light is wrong because it did on the same day I last had my oil changed. How do I clear these lights out. I bought this car slightly used and don't have the manual. Thanks, Amanda |

There is a fuse panel on the driver's side of the dash. Turn the key to either Accessory, or ON, i think ON(can't recall which one) and press and hold the red oil button for about 3-5 secs. The light in the instrument panel should then start flashing. Press it once more and you'll hear a few dings and the light will go off. Keep these instructions though, about 3,000-5,000 miles, the change oil light will come back on. Hope this helps you.

Re: Change oil and low oil light on in 2003 grand am
JT4721: OMFG DUDE....where did you get your info from? I hope you were high when you posted that.....shyguy is closer to what needs to be done
1) there is a side fuse panel beside the dash that can only be accessed when the driver side door is open, remove cover (it pops on and off) 2) ignition needs to be in ON position 3) there is a button in the fuse panel labeled 'reset', push the button until you see the 'change oil' light start blinking (should be just once) 4) then push and HOLD the button for a few seconds, you will hear a chime, then you can release 5) replace fuse panel cover, and you're good to go |

Re: Change oil and low oil light on in 2003 grand am
tiggie: also, if the low oil light comes on frequently, even just after a oil change, accompanied with having to add a significant amount of dex-cool more than once in two years....you might have a gasket going out, and coolent mixing with your oil = bad for rod and crank bearings.....not to crank the sirens or anything, it just seems odd that a '03 would put out a low oil pressure alarm w/out a reason for it
things to look for...white gunk on underside of oil fill cap, coolent smell in your car while you're driving, take a look under the hood, if it looks like any of the upper metal parts have even the tinyest bit of oil leaking out from where one meets the other....if your car is still under warrenty, it'd be worth your while to drive by the dealership one day and have a tech look at it, even if it means missing some work/school...if not, hopefully you know someone, or know someone who knows someone that knows something about cars to check it out |

Re: Change oil and low oil light on in 2003 grand am
I would try adding 1/2 quart of oil. Most quick lube might not fill your engine with the right oil capacity. Replacing the oil filter would also mean adding more close to a 1 quart of oil.
