89 galant timing belt swap need help!
so i got this 89 galant given to me because the guy knows i like mitsubishi's and he was having problems with it! NOW MY PROBLEM!
The timing belt came off... it was just kinda laying there when i got it... so i purchased a new one and now my boyfriend is out there trying to figure it out it is to late in the day to try to go out and get a book! We need to know how the heck you line it up to time it!!!!! He knows the basics but not about mitsubishi's! I know more about them then he does! So could someone with a book please tell us asap how to line up the timing belt so it is timed!!! thanks so much for all your help! |

Actually, it might be a waste of time to try and fix this, because this is an "interference" engine, which means if the timing belt goes, then the valves eat the pistons. If that happened, you'd be better off getting a new engine, and probably a new car.
But if you still want to try to line up the pullys, you better buy a book because there is TWO timing belts, and it's a little complex. |

yeah buy a book cos the second belt is a balance shaft (one on the oil pump and one at the front) and if these are out by a turn even though the marks are line up your engine will vibrate like mad and you have to strip it all out again. and check the hydraulic tensioner for leaks as they can lose pressure
