ok, i have the shifter out, and coupler...decoupled, but this plate at the front is eluding me. i don't see it anywhere. i've looked underneath the front and all i see is two 13mm bolts right behind the license plate area but those don't get me anywhere. they don't loosen anything. i'm stuck here. so i can't get the shift rod out. i did a search here but came up with nothing. i would appreciate it if someone could maybe send me a couple of pictures if possible. [email protected] thanks again for the help!

Re: help replacing shift rod bushing on 71 super beetle
The plate is right above the center of the sway bar. To get the rod out you will have to do some cutting or remove the body. Why do you want it out?

Re: help replacing shift rod bushing on 71 super beetle
uh.....well.....i thought i had to at least slide it out enough to replace the bushing in the mount in the tunnel. but there is no visible plate underneath the car. i've found some pictures of the plate on the net, but you can't see it on mine, like it's underneath some part of the body there.

Re: help replacing shift rod bushing on 71 super beetle
The hole is behind that panel that is bolted above the sway bar. Most of the replacement bushings (@ the shifter side) are split so you don't have to take the tube out.
