engine just dies after 20 min

93 vortec w code new fuel pump,filter and cpi starts runs for 20 min and just dies wont start back up for hours

Does it run rough when it is running?

When it dies, have you checked for spark at the end of each spark plug wire?

not running rough ,checked spark but not at each plug wire ,was running rough when i first started it after installing cpi but after a min running smouth

once it dies and won't start, check to see if you are getting spark.

Sounds like the ignition module heating up and going dead. I would check t hat at least first off, then work my way around to a coil.

again, try replacing the ignition module
It may be heating up and going bad

ok well it will start on starting fluid so it must be a fuel issue

did you replace the nut kit when you replaced the CPI unit?

no but i only had washing on the passenger side

Did you check fuel pressure after it died?

Have seen this problem on other '93's including my own. For some reason, the socket on the fuel pump relay becomes intermittent, metal fatigue in the connectors. GM sells, whoda quessed, an upgraded socket with heat shrink connectors.

When it dies, and you turn the ignition off and then back on, do you hear the pump prime? Have you tried to put 12V to the test wire next to the pump relay and the pump runs? If you answered no on 1 and yes on 2, look to the relay.

yes it holds fuel preasure, and the pump is primeing

If you have spark when it dies, the fuel pump is priming, it will start and die with a shot of ether, then your right, you have fuel issues.

The only other option is:

1. Defective CPI unit
2. Wiring issues to the CPI
3. ECM problems
