92 VR6 dosen't start

My 92 vr6 (automatic) just stop cranking over a few days ago. At first thought it was the battery so I replaced it. Worked fine for few days then same problem. I checked the battery for power and it was fine. I also checked the starter and it was fine. I Then noticed somthing weird.
When I turn the ignition on I noticed that the digital console is showing the car in the "Drive" position even though the shifter is clearly in the park position. Obviously if the car thinks the shifter is in Drive its not going to start. I tried playing with the shifter but no luck. Can someone let me know where should I start to diagnose this problem. Thanks.

That's a pretty good sign the multi-function (park/neutral & reverse light) switch on the transmission is bad. That is assuming you really aren't in drive, like if the shifter linkage is very out of adjustment.

Its definitly not in Drive. I jumped the starter so I could use it for work today. I'll check out the multi-function (park/neutral & reverse light) switch. Thanks for the help!!!!
