Best Tranny for 99 Civic Si?

I have a 1999 Civic Si with a Greddy turbo kit running at 8 psi. I have had to replace the third gear syncro and now the fourth gear syncro needs replacement too. I also have a Phantom Grip LSD conversion. What would be a better tranny for the car? I was looking at a JDM Civic Type R tranny (EK9). Would that be compatable with my car? Is it stronger? Would I notice a difference with its LSD? Do you know some of the features? Would I need any additional parts? Would a 6 speed Integra Type R work? Any info would be great.

Thanks

Personally if i were you i would consider possibly doing a conversion from a cable to hydraulic tranny and then finding a 92-93 B18C1 GSR tranny and get an LSD added to it. This should help to eliminate all current tranny problems and prevent future problems.

he has a b16 tranny, the only faster tranny is a type r tranny which is compatable. if your not getting a type r tranny, keep your current tranny.

you might want to check out www.gear-speed.com they sell carbon coated syncros. oh and ditch that phantom grip bs, get a qauife or obx lsd

No, the K series 6 speed tranny will not work.

You would be better off looking for a GSR tranny. It has slightly longer gearing, which would be ideal for your boosted setup.

Stock Honda LSD's are good, until you start putting down some serious power. If you are looking for a good, in-expensive LSD. Pick up the one from OBX. Ahhh, OBX you say.. There is a guy here running low 10's, with a OBX LSD. So far it has held up fine.

gsr is ideal only for highway driving, not for drag racing. b16 is bested only by the type r tranny

Under a boosted setup?

You will be shifting so often, you will fall out of boost quicker.

not if you shift fast enough. even still the goal is too accerlerate quicker, what will make you accerlerate quicker, a gsr trans or a b16 trans, of course its the b16 trans

Re: Best Tranny for 99 Civic Si?

you know, the boosted b16 vs b18c tranny has been argumented over and over here on AF and HT. i think we should just let the new people search it and come to their own conclusions.

the main goal of the tranny is that you cross the finish line at the top of 4th

I spent tons of time argueing this topic in my earlier days here @ AF. Searching is a good idea...and I agree with Kris. A Type-R tranny is great for N/A but for boost? As he said, you'll be shifting so quickly, falling out of the turbo's power band much quicker. If you have a big turbo this will create some "fun" turbo spooling. Type-R trannys are by far the best tranny for what they came on...an N/A car...but I wouldn't want to run a turbo'd car with one.

ok so tell me which one is the turbo dyno ?

this

or this

my point is, the powerbands are the same it makes power roughly in the same shape as a na motor. so your tranny choice would be the same as a na motor, the fastest accerlating tranny there is. youll want to find a tranny you top out of 4th at.

The top one?

Each tuner/driver will have their own personal preferance.

Very good point Kris, and good question civickiller. I suppose it's all apples and oranges we are argueing about in terms of which is better....better for what? As you guys said, driver perference...and none of us have ever stated WHAT we feel it's better for, driver perference wise...we just argue that is better.

So...MattyO217, better for what? Better for highway/street? Better for drag? Better for accerleration? Better for something else? What's "better" for one may not be "better" for the other situation.
