Replacing coolant in new engine
OK guys, don't hurt me too bad on this question. I have a basic and yet stupid question. I just bought a new crate motor 4.3L for my 1991 Blazer. New water pump, new radiator, new radiator cap, new hoses and the whole works. Well, I was wondering what is the best way to go about putting the coolant into the motor. What I mean by this is...do I just put the coolant into the radiator and crank the engine a few times to get coolant into the block or should I take my water pump off and fill the block through the holes where the pump is and then fill up the radiator? I hope some of you know where I am coming from on this question. I didn't know if the block would get too hot without coolant being in there at first. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks fellas.

Re: Replacing coolant in new engine
maybe you could put some in where the thermostat is and then hook the hose up and fill up the rad so that way when there is some in the therm housing it has a head start thats what i did when mine overheated i put it in there before fillin

Thank You for your suggestion, I appreciate it. I will try that also. I am still wondering about whether to pour some into the block though.

Re: Replacing coolant in new engine
Best thing to do is not have any thermostat in there and allow the coolant to enter the engine when the engine is started.

Re: Replacing coolant in new engine
It would cause a lot of damage if the engine was heating up with no coolant whatsoever.
This way you can guarantee coolant is getting in there.
