I think it is because they want to keep their TPI set-up and changing over to a Pontiac Tranny bolt pattern is a pain in the ass. Either you have to put an obsolete Pontiac tranny in it or cut off the chevy bellhousing and put a Pontiac bellhousing on it. Ultimately, you can make more power easier with the set-up they came with rather than dropping a heavier older engine in. I've heard of it being done but never actually seen it.

Re: A Poncho V8 Motor in a 3rd gen Firebird ?

You don't understand - The point is to WANT to have a Actual Pontiac V-8 in it-

Of course the bolt on stuff is easier.

Heavier older engine ?
Do you know what the weight difference in a stock 305 Vs a pontiac 455 with and aluminum intake and/or heads ?

And if you think you can make more power out of a chevy small block than a Pontiac 400/428/455 and drive on less than jet fuel you've never owned one...

And you can use an adapter if you want a later model 700-r or 5/6 speed trans on it.

Or you can use a beefed up 200-4r trans from a Grand National or any "G" on it.

I have a '79 T/A with the Pontiac 400...I love the motor and it has torque you wouldn't believe. Its just that 400s are more and more expensive these days and harder to find. Add on a set of expensive aluminum heads and you might as well just abandon the whole idea of owning a house anytime soon and live in the car. Im sure it would make a lot of power, but if the small block 350 chevy motor were not more economical, then no one would use it...they would use the 400s. It is just more cost effective to stick with the chevy motor is all.

Re: A Poncho V8 Motor in a 3rd gen Firebird ?

A small block 350 chevy motor more economical ?

Corporate Cookie Cutouts- Mass produced junk- 305 to 350 ratio anyway - How much money do you have to dump in the fuel injected things to get the power and torque of a Big Poncho.

Anyway it would just be cool to have one- no not for a grocery getter, not for daily drivablity.

Aluminum heads are not that much more for a pontiac than a chevy small block- bout the same as a big block.

Everybody has a firebird with a camaro inside of it, thats why I wanted to see one with an Injun in it...

i dont see why it makes such a big deal to you. its still gm. It would be cool to have a 455 in my third gen. but for that cost, i could build a nice 383 that will bolt right in, and probabley make more power. why would i go with the difficult engine that is still going to cost me more money, and will probabley take a year to find.

See if I have to explain why it's a big deal - Why would anyone go through the trouble, then there is no point explaining it to you in the first place....

I never asked you to explain anything.

Listen lets let this go. no one here owns a Pontiac powered 3rd gen. maybe you should ask teh question at thirdgen.org, asquite a few guys there have done big block swaps.
