91 Escort starter relay location ?

91 Escort starts (cranks) interminitently- Good starter, clutch switch, new ignition switch - I see a starter relay listed in the parts store but-

ANYBODY KNOW WHERE IT IS ???

I have 5 relays under the dash kinda by the fuse box - but I would assume it would be in the engine compartment ?

Any help ? Thanks !

Re: 91 Escort starter relay location ?

Im pretty sure that's not your problem. Try turning your ignition key on but just before it starts and listen for a small humming sound from your gas tank to cye if it may be your fuel pump. If you cant here the sound try looking in your trunk on the right side and remouve the plastic cover on the side, that is you fuel cut off switch that is designed to cut the fuel sepply incase of a role over. Push the red button and try starting the engine. If that dosent work msg me so I can tell you the mext step to take.

No - The starter would not turn - not 'start' Thought it was a bad relay- The positive cable burnt the fuseable link when the ignition wouldn't turn off apparenty- just enough left to work some of the time......

Re: 91 Escort starter relay location ?

I think he's saying......

Sometimes the starter works (turns the engine over) and sometimes it doesn't (doesn't do anything).

Now trouble shoot that, but I think he claims to ahve already found the problem.

The starter relay (solonoid) is located near the battery on the left inner fender. The (+) battery cable is attached to it.
Intermittent cranking sounds like a bad ground. Check battery cables for cleanliness (corrosion) and tightness at the battery, starter solonoid, starter, and the ground cable to chassis, and chassis to engine.

Tomminajar,
Your 'clues' are not clear to me and need clarification i.e. "The starter would not turn - not 'start'"
"The positive cable burnt the fuseable link when the ignition wouldn't turn off ......" You need to tell us about that event.

If you burned a fusible link near the solonoid, then the accessories will probably not work, and the car will not start. The cause of the fusible link burning (short) must be determined and fixed. I've never seen a partially burned fusible link.....they are the weakest link (like a fuse) and protect the circuit from damage. Look at the fusible link/s carefully, and if you see signs (bubbling) of being hot, they probably are shot.

Jet-Lee,
Some of those needing help forget that we are not there. We do not know the history of the problem and can only troubleshoot on the clues they give us. I enjoy helping and troubleshooting but, sometimes we are working with a foggy crystal ball.
