If third is anything like fourth gen, then you have to take the dash cover (the large plastic piece from the windshield to the dash board) off, this will include removing a lot of little interior trim pieces, then remove the intrument bezel cover (the actual piece that covers your guages and such). Then you should be able to get to the switch from behind.
It is a staight forward job, but be CAREFUL when you are taking off the the dash cover because it sits in the sun all day and is BRITTLE!!! Good Luck---go to the library and check out the Chilton for your specific model and see what they say and if you are comfortable--have at it.

Re: headlight switch broke
you could try it but then you will have to worry about it. Do what you think is best but do yourself a favor and see how difficult it will be from the manuals first--then make your decision

Re: headlight switch broke
yeah id never had to deal with this untill i took my dash out, and i gotta say it is alot harder to get to than i would have thought. depending on how skinny your arms are, and how flexible you are, you might have to pull the dash forward away from the firewall to get to it, at least if memory serves correctly. not that bad, just a time consuming task.

Re: headlight switch broke
Pull the black plastic bezel off that goes around the wheel and gauges.. it just clips in at the top, I think there are two torx screws that hold it on the bottem
then you can get a better look of exactly whats broken and if you can get at it

Re: headlight switch broke
im kind of bulky and dont think i could do that. not that flexible, but ill try getting the face off. to turn them off i had to pull the fog light switch panel off and stick a finger behing the switch then push in the knob.
