Re: Ebay Products

if its concerning saftey i would not trust ebay with seats...lol but thats just me. i buy other things from ebay and they work fine. but seats i personally would not trust unless they have a warranty and covers such defects as that... i would like to read some more replies on this cuz its a pretty interesting question...

For anything safety related, I usually consider that it's worth it to spend the extra money for something good. Driving is all well and good, but if I die or am crippled, the fun's over. I only have reputible brake shops work on my brakes (or have a brake tech certify my work), and everything safety related I buy new.

Safety comes FIRST in my ride- one of the first aftermarket things going in the car is a well-padded seat, complete with 4 or 5 point harnesses and harness bars. I"ll probably go with MOMO seats (I've got a fat ass, and MOMO is expensive but worth it), and either G-Force or Simpson harnesses.

Slightly offtopic, you should never ever buy used motorcycle helmets- the tiny microfractures, and packing material compression that comes with age makes the helmet not nearly as effective.

Re: Ebay Products

i would reccomend not buying seats off ebay either, i would want full warranty and everything on the seats. i try not to mess with anything on my car that i know would jeopardize my safety or the cars functioning

obviously they can't be that bad because there sure a lot of people that have bought them... and you know that if they were really unsafe it would have been on 60 minutes or something...

wow, that's some flawed logic, right there... "no one has said anything, so they must be safe." Let's try this in some other situations, eh?

"Well, the Titanic's unsinkable, so we don't need the lifeboats!"
"Hey, no one's complained about getting gassed in the chambers, so it must be okay!"
"My, my, this Gremlin sure LOOKS safe, and I havn't heard any complaints about it..."
"That rope swing over the rocks has held up tons of kids, so it MUST be safe!"

... okay, my examples may not be the best, but you get the idea. Just because you havn't seen a special report on something doesn't mean that it's safe, just that a fameous-enough person hasn't found them unsafe yet. Which is practically a guarantee, as fameous people (and other smart types) typically purchase safety equipment only from authorized dealers and reputable businesses.

i wouldn't exactly put ebay seats in the same category as the halocust, only a tru dumb azz would... anyways, hundreds of racing seats have been sold on ebay, and if they were bad i am sure someone would have said something by now... whatever floats your boat man, my best friend has a set and he ain't said a word about them, but he ain't been in a head on collision either...

I was using an outrageously silly example, to point out the sillyness of your statement. As with aliens, chemistry, and research sciences, you cannot prove something does not exist, simply because you have not heard of it before.

I'm sure that there are a great many perfectly-safe seats sold on Ebay. However, if there were lots of bad seats being sold, I still somehow doubt that we would hear anything about them. Considering that each transation on ebay is between one seller and one purchaser, there would need to be a very high (above 75%) rate of seats in VERY poor condition to be sold for anything to be done about it. Another problem is that, as with rappelling harnesses and other safety gear, It is often difficult to determine wither something is safe or not simply by a visual inspection. A used motorocycle helmet that looks perfectly fine will have crushed padding from day-to-day use, and microfractures in the composite material, that could prove deadly to the wearer in an accident. An "8" or a "safety-8" that looks fine could fail halfway down a 200 foot drop, because someone dropped it on the floor a few months ago.

There is a risk with buying ANY safety equipment used, and it is one that needs to be taken into consideration. Would I purchase a used 4 or 5-point harness that was in good repair? Sure. same thing for a harness bar, or a fire-retardant racing suit. These things can be visually checked for problems. But you can't see fractures in a seat structure, or other problems.

In any case, if you buy a seat from a reputable store or authorized dealer, and it fails in an accident or breaks otherwise, you at least have SOME recourse towards being recompensated (at least with a new seat!)... buying off of ebay is, was, and ever will be, a Final Transation, with no Warranty, even if implied.

.

hundreds of people didnt make thousands of trips on the titanic then say its good to go, sucker went down the first trip.

no one is supposed to live in the gas chamber so when hella people die there the media doesnt see it as an "irregular" thing for the gas chamber.

and if the rope swing has held up tons of kids and you can see it isnt fraying and isnt an old britle rope then Id swing on it no problem, and if I did get hurt it would be my fault for letting go of the rope and falling on the rocks most likely.

the gremlin one I really dont know what to say cuz I dont know if they were death traps or not, never heard much about them.

so with the thousands of seats that have sold on ebay, if they did suck and break in an accident and injure soemone more than they owuld have been injured wiht an unbroken stock/ brand name aftermarket seat. and this happened frequently you will most likely hear about it.

Re: Ebay Products

I don't understand what you guys are arguing about. The only way I can really see a seat causing some kind of injury is if you didn't tighten it down enough. That's the owner's fault, not the seat's or Ebay's.

Seatbelts/harnesses on the other hand is another story. Good chance that cheapo ones will frey and tear in an accident with all the friction between it and your body.

Re: Ebay Products

I dont know, but maybe this guy is thinking when you hit a wall, the impact will cause the seat to bust and fall off the rails and youll slide out under the belt orpart of the seat at the crack will stab you or...

if you've got a composite seat, and the material has a crack in it, it can fail in an accident, causing severe injury. if you have a metal-tube seat, and a joint is cracked or has broken and been repaired, it can fail in an accident.

the idea, bad examples or not, is that you shouldn't probably get gear you trust your life with from a yardsale- even if that yardsale has sold tons of other things that no one has complained about- no one who has made the news, anyway.

Re: Ebay Products

but he isnt saying since people dont complain about much on ebay(the yard sale) that other stuff must be good, hes saying that since this yardasale has sold thousands of the same thing and noones come back saying this pos hurt me or the authority shuts down the sale of this yard sale item at the yard sale cuz people are dying from it it must be ok

I dont go around saying my flat scren daewoo TV looks sick and works good. so their cars must be the shiznit I gotta go get me one. or car toys sells goodsubs form JL and RF so those jensens over there must pound.
