Re: Want to make my 86 celica quicker

There are literaly hundreds of things you can do, first off you need to set yourself a budget, how much do you want to spend? How much faster do you want your car to go? & what you going to use it for?

If you want to turn it into a track car/racer type thing then you could go for a engine swap, but it is expensive and time consuming and can often turn into a giant ball ache.

The next stage is to add things like Turbo`s/superchargers but these are also expensive and can be more trouble than they are worth unless you know what you are doing or have a trustworthy mechanic to go to.

Both of these can give you good power gains but sometimes at the cost of drivability and reliability.

If you want to use your car as a daily driver and just use it to race every now and then (not on the streets of course cause thats illegal ) there are many after market parts that will give your car "the edge" and help you get faster.

Start off with exhaust and induction kits to help the engine Breath, a full cat back exhaust and cone airfilter could give you maybe 1-5 bhp gains realistically. be carefull with your choice cause some cone filters are bad and have crappy filtration and actually reduce BHP & torque levels so do some research. Along with that you could change ignition leads (HT Leads) and spark plugs, again check out which suits your car the best, whats good for one make may suck in your Toyota.
Change the fuel filter, on an old car it could be blocked with debris from inside the fuel lines as the degrade or from dirty fuel. (not comon but possible).
Next on the list would be suspension upgrades, A well set up car can often beat a more powerfull car as it can put the power down more effectively, get round corners quicker etc, On the list for this should be at least some harder springs that will reduce ride height, thus lower your center of gravity, but I`d go for some shocks aswell just to complete the package. if you want to go further you could invest in some thicker antiroll bars.
After that your next step could be things like a cam change, after market cams keep your valves open for longer letting more fuel in (I think thats how they work?). Also inlet and outlet manifolds can be changed, again to help the engine breath more easily but things are starting to get expensive and unless you know what you are doing I`d let a pro set them up for you. A cheaper way can be to polish your inlet manifold, remove any obstructions to the flow of air such as casting blemish`s etc. This can also be done to the valve head but leave that to the pro`s.
If you car has a carburator and not fuel injected you can get a bigger carb or even fit multi carbs, fuel economy goes down, but speed goes up , and can be done quite easily if you can find a suitable inlet manifold. If your car is fuel injected you can get it chipped to re-govern the engine (ie put more fuel in, remove flat spots in the power band etc). A stronger high flow fuel pump can often help, especially with a carb.
But remember if you are going to make your car faster, remember to upgrade the brakes, start with better pads, in fact I`d make that the first thing you do, always make your car stop before you make it Go, bigger/better disks, upgraded brake pipes that dont flex under heavy breaking etc. Good luck with your project and I hope this just about covers everything you wanted to know.

all ive done to my 86 GT is put a new larger exhaust on and custom made an intake tube with a cone filter from autozone. Gonna try and change the fuel filter some time and add a custom cold air tube with a big ram opening under the radiator. the 2se engine is actually pretty quick for a SOHC. the intake tube i made was from a piece of exhaust pipe from autozone that i cut to fit and painted to match the rest of the engine bay. good luck.
